What size are pivot nuts?

What size are pivot nuts and are they castle nuts? Is this a hardware store item?

Sorry for the long delay, I was picking up another car.

The lower pivot shaft at the back of the spring pan. I was at work when I wrote this and wanted to run out to get new ones. I am replacing the front end and I cannot locate an extra set to clean up for them.
 
Should I use castle nuts & pins or nylock?
 
If you're talking about the A-arm nuts, use castles and pins. Never trust a nylok to hold on a nut that could kill you!
 
Castles and pins it is.

Would you believe that there are some car people today that don't know what a castle nut is!
 
I knew to use castles but someone suggested using nylock. I'll use nylock on many places but suspension seemed a little risky.
 
Don't use them anywhere near high heat either.

Regarding Nylok:

Where Ny = nylon, Nylon + heat = melting.

As melting = no more nylon, -Ny = loose nuts.

Therefore -Ny = sudden death.
 
I just came back in from the garage and have a list of what nuts I need.

Properly torqued, these are fine. The preload on the thread root is what holds the joint tight, not the nylon collar.

A Nylok nut is probably better than a helical lock washer in most applications.
 
I've seen melted nyloks near engines and exhaust. And if they were safe for suspension use, then there wouldn't be castle nuts and pins. I'm not trusting thread friction to keep critical safety fasteners from vibrating loose over thousands of miles of road use! Sure they might be fine and stay tight forever, but why take the chance? The cost and effort are basically the same.
