Wedge What should I pay for a TR7

Didn't think I was going to get the TR3 done in Time for the TRF summer party so I've been looking for a TR7 to fill in the gap. The reason for the 7 is to finish up the collection. One of every body type TR.

Anyhow I looked at a couple here in Northeastern Ohio and they are a little rougher then I'd like to start out with. The starting price for a driver that needs work (all 7s need work) is around $2300. There are some asking $4k + and some even $7k. Just want a solid daily driver that a little light mechanical work or a paint touch up will do. No restorations here. I'm tired of them. Would you believe the first guy wouldn't even let me drive his car! Amazing. How does one expect to sell a car that way?

Slowing down the search now that the since of urgency is now over. The tranny is now in the 3 and it drives great. If I find the right car at the right price I'll jump on it. Just need to know what to pay.

Also what makes a Spider so valuable? It's only a 7 with nicer wheels, fuel injection and a great paint job. But they seem to go for thousand more the a regular Tr7.

I assume your looking for a convertible. Now there are the 1979s that have less than exciting for colors and interior combinations The late 1979 made for 1980 started with better interiors, color combinations, 3.45 rear axle to help highway cruising, and the second buldge in the hood/bonnet. Now the 1981a to me besides the fuel injection (infection) are the climax. The TR7 spiders are different interiors, bblack paint, TR8 alloys with a hand punched "S" after the part number and the stripe kit that is finally being reproduced. The VIN is different so it has a seperate production identification form a TR7 and TR8. Now if it was me I would look for a November 1979 build date and newer TR7. Most common are 5-speeds. Rust and head gaskets are the concerns I would have. If it has been changed from the original color I would stay away from the car. This typically means rust, accident damage or both! If it is original paint then that is a good starting point.

I know of a really nice original TR7 for sale with about 40K on it. 5 Speed, Pageant blue with blue check interior in Western Pa. I think he is asking about $5,000 for it.

To answer your question I would say the likely range is $2,500 for a solid driver thaqt needs interior, paint and TLC up to $6,000 for a turn key drive nice car with maybe original paint or a respray and excellent mechanicals and electricals.

Thanks wedgeworks! I think that blue one you are referring to was sold a couple of weeks ago. I was at Team Triumph a couple of weeks ago and there was a couple that drove up in a very nice TR7. Blue with the checkered interior you described. They were talking to Scott who turned them on to it. We had a discussion later and it was from PA.

I was surprised that they paid that much for it. Didn't realize TR7s were bring that kind of money now. Anyway you were a big help. There is a 81 PI that I'm waiting for the guy to move and settle in. He had some front end problems and a little body damage on the rear quarter. We met last summer when the car had a lot more issues. He did some fixing up over the year and wanted $1300 for it last year.

If this one was closer you could look at it. there are a couple tr7 dhc's on the pdx craigs list that look good for the price (less than $1k)
