What produces TR6 Sound

That TR6 Sound:

The first thing you notice when you start your TR 6 is the sound: resonant, deep, and music to your ears.The second is the smoothness.There are technical reasons for this and in this article I’ll share some:

The sound, this is a 4 cycle engine, the crankshaft turns twice for each complete cycle, the pistons are in pairs and there are 3 pairs in a 6 cylinder, two pistons are at TDC together, only one fires. There is a power pulse (firing cylinder) every 120 degrees of crankshaft rotation equally divided between the front three and the rear three cylinders.

The exhaust manifold is split between cylinders 1,2,3 and 4,5,6. All pipes from the engine to the exhaust tips are the same length (tuned system). Triumph was more concerned with the quality of sound than in muffling it, it’s why other manufacturers 6’s don’t sound like the Triumph.

Another reason is the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 is a symmetrical firing pattern. There is a power pulse every 120 degrees of crankshaft rotation equally divided between the front three and the rear three cylinders.

Remember, the crank turns twice for each complete cycle, 120 degrees times 6 power strokes equals 720 degrees or two rotations. At 3,000 RPM there are 9,000 exhaust pulses per minute, 4,500 equally spaced pulses per minute into each pipe.

That equal spacing keeps those pulses from canceling or interfering with each other. This results in the soothing, pleasant, purring, resonant sound. A V6 is really two 3 cylinder engines hence the lack of music.

There is even more reason to love that in-line 6, the engine is in perfect balance. Without getting too technical on the inertia forces set up in an automobile engine the text book for the Mechanics of Machinery says this “The six cylinder in-line engine is in complete balance with regard to both primary and secondary forces.

The in-line six cylinder is one of the most perfectly balanced engines of the usual multi cylinder type that it is possible to construct. There was a reason for Jaguar to call their V-12 the Double Six, two banks of in-line six cylinders that make them incredibly smooth.

As Julius Abellera and I discovered the TR 6 will harmonize when side by side even with non factory exhaust systems. We once had three TR6’s side by side on a multi lane freeway at 60 MPH and the resonance makes your fillings vibrate, and puts a big smile on all three drivers faces. Just one more reason to not buy a Miata.

Donald Healey was once asked what made the Austin Healey exhaust sound so good, he replied “ That’s the sound of a properly aspirated engine,”

The same applies to a Healey straight 6.
 
When we both shifted to our respective overdrives at 60 MPH, 5th gear for theirs, switched OD for mine, both Healey engines synced, resonated and pulsed. A rare treat side-by side drive with another Healey at speed.
 
6 cyl exhaust notes echos in tunnels, off trees, fwy sound barriers is nice, however the side by side harmonic balance of another LBC 6 cyl is both magical & unique other than side by side with another 6 cyl no need to force, it will happen as they'll sync when they ready
