What paint gun should I use?

Offline
Will one of those $50-60 paint guns be OK for painting your car, or do you need a $350 setup?

I plan to do my wifes car's roof, then possibly my whole car. Etching primer and paint (probably base/clear)

I was looking at something like this...

I used a cheap one and it was fine. Then I tried an expensive one and what a difference Not sure you would need to go to $350 though.

I have all three kinds. The one that is the bst all around is the top tank units. I bought two for $100 (?). One has a larger opening for paints like primers. The difference in price for the top mounted cup units is the material the cup is made of. Be sure to buy a good cleaning kit to go with it. The cleaner the gun the easier it is to paint with.

I use Devilbiss Finishline, it is a top cup HVLP. It uses a lot of air, my Coleman powermate air compressor does not keep up. If cup liners are availble for whatever gun you buy, I would use them as they really reduce cleanup time and waste thinner.

thanks guys. I especially liked the tip on the cup liners. I hate cleaning my small airbrush.

I've a DeVilbiss from waay back, it was $300 *then*. A Graco gravity fed that will durn-near spray concrete, Binks Wren-B airbrush... Of all, the most useful lately has been the Graco. I cracked the line pressure up to 45PSI and shot the MG top coat with it. Absofeakinlootly lovely result. If I were to go for a new one, it'd be what Mark has. The cheap "counterfeit" Binks copies work okay for primers, but for a finish coat there IS a difference.

So how'd the project work out? What did you use?

...curious minds wanna know.

I haven't got the gun yet, but I appreciate everyone's time and answers! Helped me decide whih one I'm gonna get soon.
