TR4/4A What modified carby air filters to use on my TR4 RHD.

I have converted to a TR6 pedal box, clutch, brake booster/master cylinder.
For members that have done this conversion please advise what air filters you used as space is now very limited for filter fitment between carby and clutch master cylinder.

Welcome to the forum. Great car form your pics. Not much experience with RHD but If I were you, I'd make a trip to my local motorcycle shop. You'd have to make an adapter as most mc filters go on with a hose clamp. l can't think of anything off the shelf that would fit.

K&N offers lots of filters for just about any application. This is my MGB using the inside air filter plate to mount filters vs the regular filter housings. I have a similar mount on my Bugeye and will do the same thing on my TR4a when the time comes.

A somewhat ususual solution may be to have some velocity stacks fabricated that curve around the master cylinder and just use filter caps on the ends of the velocity stacks.

Likely not the direction you want to go, but if you can't find a decent filter solution you could consider putting a short runner manifold on the car to give you the clearance.

Something like this might work.

That was going to be my suggestion. How does the RHD TR6 handle this? Does it have a shorter intake manifold?

Thanks guys...
All things considered, including cost, I will probably go for the motor bike type filters with a bent neck attachment.
Will have to make base plates to bolt on to the carbies with a short length of tube welded onto the plates.
I have also done a throttle cable conversion [lokar type] and will need a carby base plate anyway.

I also used the TR6 pedal box when I rebuilt my TR4A. At that time, to register the car, you had to install dual circuit brakes if you were converting from left to right hand drive. I wanted to use as many Triumph parts as possible and the pedal box and dual circuit master cylinder were a good fit. However, mine has the clutch master cylinder above the pedal box so I have plenty of clearance for air cleaners. I have run K&Ns but I have Ram Flos on it at the moment. They keep out rocks and small birds. Probably too late to change your clutch but it does give a lot more clearance.

Is that a Spitfire bracket on the clutch master? The rubber protector sure looks like what I recall from my wife's Spitfire.

No, that is how it was mounted on RHD TR6s to give clearance for the induction system. Malbaby has used the LHD clutch mounting which was designed to clear the windscreen wiper motor on the left hand side but as he has found, causes problems if used unchanged on a RHD car. The bracket is probably the same as the Spitfire one. Triumph were masters at using the same parts on a number of models just like VW does today. I wondered why it was so easy to get a windscreen for the 4A till I realised that it is used in TR 4/5/6 as well as Spitfires and GT6s.

Thanks again.
I assume Triumph made the pedal boxes to be used as R or LHD.
I was after a cleaner look engine bay, even though it will not be "as original", so I do not mind a trade off with modified air filters.

The TR6 inner fenders are shaped differently from those of the TR4(a) so a lower profile filter is needed. I found the flat K&N would not fit my car but the conical ones should clear the fender, just!
