WHAT MAKES BRITISH CARS SO SPECIAL - PART TWO...

Re: WHAT MAKES BRITISH CARS SO SPECIAL - PART TWO.

I can't put my finger quite on it, but:

When I was small, my uncle in New Brunswick had an Austin A40 Somerset. I can still smell the leather. Used to go to the dump with him in it. That last sentince was not a disparaging remark, by the way.

First car I ever drove (I was about 11) was another uncle in New Brunswick's Hillman Minx.

I did a lot of driving on my learner's permit in a 1967 Rover 2000 TC, unbeknownst to my parents.

Ah! It's a man's life!

Or a sickness. Never figured out which.

Colin

Re: WHAT MAKES BRITISH CARS SO SPECIAL - PART TWO.

I think the classic LBC as we all know and think about is pretty much gone and can't come back. Govt regulations, and most people wouldn't allow it. The low cost, simplicity, attitude ect... People want their computers, power steering, windows, A/C and DvD's too much, and government regulations choke the simplicity out of any car. The examples given are not LBC's, and arguably, are British in name only. I think the last vestages of LBC went away when they built the last "true" Mini in about 2000. The only car that I can think of that could qualify as an LBC today may be the Chaterham "7" (originally Lotus 7), British owned and built, simple, can be worked on-in fact-bought and built in your driveway....., and compared to the overpriced foreign owned, examples listed in the original post... cheap! It is not mass produced and readily available though, so that right there takes away what made an LBC...

:iagree: Totally...hence this wonderful Forum where we are dedicated to keeping our little, old, anachronistic LBCs alive!!
