....designed the locktab washer for the flywheel?

Questions:
i. Where do I grease the water pump?
ii. What can I plug up the holes (oil cooler, oil pressure etc..) in the engine block with, prior to power washing?
iii. Should I take the front clip off to get my motor back in?
Iv. Now that the engine is out, is 'what have I done?' normal?
v. What is the simple answer to the ultimate question?

I'm panicing now guys, there's no way I can make the Champaign Brit Show on Memorial Day, and it'll be a push to get to the Ozarks.
Please forgive me, the questions will come often, please have pateience with me.

I put my entire engine in the tank...left every hole in the engine open...& I wouldn't remove any other body parts for the engine job.

[/QUOTE]Depends.

i. If it's an original pump there is a screw on top of the shaft. remove screw, lube. If it's a newer pump no lube.
ii. I used plumbing fittings, plastic caps from a/c lines and rubber plugs.
iii. Not necessary.
iv. Yes

just put the engine/tranny back in with the clip in - slow and easy with lots of towels - took 2 1/2 hours start to finish

Iv. Now that the engine is out, is 'what have I done?' normal?

Totally - I get it most days - start somewhere anywhere AND - do something every single day - no exceptions!

v. What is the simple answer to the ultimate question?

For #3 -- I'd recommend it. Having now pulled one motor from a Midget, and one from a Bugeye, the Bugeye was a *huge* amount simpler. Engine and tranny just sort of slid right out. YMMMV.

For #4 -- Absolutely! Everytime I walk into the garage and see the Tunebug up on jack stands, with the engine at Hap's shop all the way across the country, suspension on a shelf, exhaust and windshield in the basement, gas tank in a corner, wheels in another corner... I think the same thing. Then I get over it and get back to work.

I have always used Permatex No. 2 on both sides of the gasket and have never had one leak.

Roger that, or use just a swipe of form a gasket on both sides of the gasket.

That sounds like good advice JP. What I need, is a plan.
I'm just stressing out, Rivergate is behind on their machining, Hap has my carbs, looking at the Datsun tranny compared to the Ribcase, I'm not sure it'll fit; so I apprecaite all your assistance here.
Tomorrow, I WILL get that flywheel off.

To get the lock tabs down on the flywheel, I used a chisel to get them away from the nuts, then a flat piece of aluminum to flatten them.

Baz -

For # 4 ("what in the heck did I just do") - somethings not right if you don't get that uneasy feeling.

Do you know how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

George

Use a flat chisel and knock those tabs back, and figure on getting a new replacement lock tab ring. I'd leave the front body work on. Place some heavy moving blankets over your fenders and the front.

You'll do fine, just keep the faith. We're all here to help.

and just to keep me honest - tonight was - get the car back on jack stands - start reinstalling emergency brake. Found all the parts/ bolts - put the lever end back together - installed - walked back to work bench - what's that washer doing there? Oh, it's the washer that goes between the cotter pin and the pin holding the cable on. It the first thing you assembled. I don't really need that do I? Yes you do idiot! Dismantle and reinstall.

The really good news is that having restored two Midgets - OK done everything twice, I'm going to be really good at this

:wall:

relax and enjoy - it really does get logical one piece at a time

v.42 ....ahhh, yes , hitchiker.....

baz, why r u taking the flywheel off?

u REALLY need an air wrench if u dont
have one.... that and an air compressor
wil only run about $150 at harbour freight,
and makes most jobs ALOT quicker and easier..
also a large farm sized, 2 ft socket set
goes a long ways sometimes on those big nuts........ziimmmy

Speaking of elephants, yesterday morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas.....

How he got in my pajamas I shall never know!!

I was encouraged that so many of us gave the answer 42!

To get the end plate off for the Rivergate adapter plate to go on.
Don't worry about me looking in that transmission Zimmy, it's trashed beyound belief.
I have air tools, it's the locking tabs that are killing me. I'm going to the dentist, and them I'm going to beat the snot out of them. They will lose.

Now that the flywheel and endplate are off (BOOYAH! WHO'S YER DADDY!) does it need to go to a machine shop for anything? ANy kind of maintenence needed on it?

I did get a little medieval with a prybar and a bfh, but there's no obvious scoring or damage, except for some wood splinters in the ring gear.
Just didn't know if it's one of those things that gets a cleaning or something.

Side question, what is the size of the crankshaft pulley bolt on the front?
