My rusted out shell needs to be cleaned up so I can get to replacing the metal.....so many different type of media. What can you recommend for a surface rusted shell that had chemical stripper applied about 25 years age and never properly cleaned up after the fact.

Please weigh in because I need to get this project on the road....but I don't want to harm the car structure. It is pitted some now but not terrible.

Soda blasting should get rid of the last paint and light rust. Heavy amounts of primer will bw needed if you have severe pitting however. Second way to do it would be scothbrite pads on an angle grinder........lots more labor intensive however. Good luck and keep us posted.

If you are going to do it yourself.
1. Do not use sand (silicosis).
2. You will probably be doing it outside and will not easily recycle the media
3. A wire brush on a grinder before you blast the shell will allow you to get most of the rust and get the metal for a quick etching with media.

If you have a Tractor Supply nearby I would get some Black Diamond. Safer, cheap and local.

Just a word of caution about the Black Diamond media. It is hard and coarse. It will cut very quickly so if you use it on large areas of sheet metal, work quickly at low angles to the surface and do not focus on spots too long unless you are willing to deal with holes or warped panels.

A once over with more paint stripper followed by ScotchBrite would be my approach followed by an wash/etch with phosphoric acid. Once you're down to bare metal apply epoxy primer to the surface to protect it.

that how I would do if I come back in my second life and actually remembered all the screws ups in my first life
