What kind of glue to use for ribbed bugeye panels?

Ceramic tile glue, the ready mixed water based stuff.
Trowel it on the inside of the door skin, let it tack up for 20-30 minutes and then fit the door rubber.
Anything else will stick too fast and you just can not get the rubber in place on the first try. The tile glue will let you slide the rubber into position before it sets up fully. Do watch and press the rubber in place as the glue sets up.

Do you mean the acrylic mastic stuff?
Thanks for the suggestion. I want something strong, but I need something that takes a while to set up. I used to be able to buy upholstery glue years ago that did just that, but I can't seem to find it any more.Can you be specific on the brand or chemical composition?

I'd be curious to know how well it will hold up over time where the door panels might be in direct sun and get hot. There is a special 3M glue for headliners, for instance. Other versions specifically state " not for headliners". Found this out the hard way years ago on a SAAB Sonnet.
I have an old tub of yellow tile glue, I have been using this for Bugeye door panels for years. My Bugeye has had the door rubbers on it for 8 years before I peeled them off for a repaint last year, I glued them back with the same tub of glue. I did my son's Bugeye 4 years ago, the Holy Sprite 3 years ago, and my daughter's Sprite last year, all are still holding well.
My 8 year old job was showing loose corners and a bulge in the middle.
It's out in the sun all summer and some winters.
Even the old tub of glue (3 gallon) was a left over from a tile job, maybe even when I tiled the upstairs of my garage in 2001. Good stuff

I used the black ribbed rubber floor covering I bought from a flooring place. I glued it with contact cement by cutting and fitting the material and then folding it down in half over itself, in place, and doing one half at a time so it stayed lined up. A bit tricky as once this stuff makes contact, it's stuck. Some of the tile adhesives become hard and brittle over time.
