was rather disgusted by the alligator tank.
(though the gators didn't seem to mind the green muck)
what is it? These pics are not "photoshopped", the stuff was just that green.

Great Zoo by the way. I'm sure the muck is intentional, as the Zoo is 1st. Class.
 
I can't really tell from the photos; could be algae or duckweed or something else. But it's some sort of plant. Lots of swamps have areas covered in it. Part of the food chain, but also provides cover for the alligator.

As a side note, some researchers are looking at algae to convert sunlight more or less directly into fuel. Interesting concept, but it's tough to compete with being able to just pump it out of the ground. Should be a lot more practical when there isn't any left in the ground, though.
