What is this part?

And where do I get a new one, or how much to have the worn areas welded and turned?

I don't know about the part but I do know if you put some barbecue sauce on it and heat it for about 2 hours, you can throw the part away and eat the board.

Thot that was only for groundhogs & 'possums.

Seriously, Ray, I don't think that's any part of a TR6.

Okay folks, think inside the bellhousing, trans case.

Might help if you post length and diameter.

Hah ! I'll bet it's the pedal pivot shaft. I didn't think so before, since the pivot shaft on a TR3 is shorter. But 582-605 in the Moss catalog looks a lot like the photo.

Unfortunately, both Moss & TRF (P/N 148017) show them as NLA. But unless it's a really strange diameter, I'll bet you could buy some commercial drill rod and cut the grooves with a Dremel cheaper than trying to overhaul the one you've got.

Bingo!

Shaft that the clutch and brake peddles ride on?

You got it right, sorry no prize. And yes, the part is NLA but fortunately the bushings are. The shaft is quite worn where the clutch road on it. The piece appears to be made of hard steel or at least case hardened. It would probably be less expensive for me to fabric a new one then heat red hot with a torch and quench in oil, then to have the original welded, then turned by a machine shop, and then case hardened.

Oh, and by the way, I'll bet most of you 4,5,250 and 6 have worn shafts.

Dale, don't worry about it, if I had not taken mine out to paint, I would have never known it was worn.

Re: Bingo!

FYI I bought a peddle box assy from ebay for $20. about 6 months ago. Came with a perfect shaft in it. You might want to give that a shot as they do come up quite often.

I'll give you $25 for it. That's 20% profit.

Re: Bingo!

Just out of interest, is the wear the same distance from each end of the shaft? Would it be possible to just turn the shaft around and use an unworn section?

Well as soon as I inspect mine I'll have an extra... I'm going to keep the best one and if the other is in good condition then sure I'll sell it to ya... price will fit condition.

Re: Bingo!

Bash,

Looking at the wear areas on the picture, it appears that the shaft is supported on both ends and the middle, with the pedals in between either side/middle.

Good idea, but the wear is symmetric.

Re: Bingo!

Interesting ... the TR3 owner's manual mentions lubing that shaft occasionally, but the TR6 doesn't. All you TR6 owners might want to write that in. Just a single drop of light machine oil at each junction, every 2-3 years, will do wonders.

I think I'm OK. DPO Pedro installed a piece of #2 rebar
steel. </span>

Re: Bingo!

Well, this is how I am going to 'fix' the 5/8" shaft. First the only wear is on the side where the clutch pedal pivoted. So, I will fill in the worn area by brazing and then file it down to the shaft's contour. I then intend to fit the repaired end to the brake pedal side where I will use two bushings to provide more bearing surface.

Not elegant, but will work and one less challenge to deal with.
