What is this part?

I found this cable and button or knob piece underneath the speedometer. It has some holes on the plate that look like it should mount. It isn't a great picture from my phone but I was hoping for some guidance on what it is.

I have a 79 Spitfire.

Not sure, but is that your emergency flasher switch? It's missing the light and the red pull knob, but the shape is about right.

It's looks like a push pull type of switch. The inside looks like the door switch

That's what I think it is, too. My busted one looked just about like that. All those wires from it argue for hazard switch as well.

Don't think the tape over the body of the switch is original (but it's not a bad idea, especially if it's dangling loose).

Hmmm, does it seem to push/pull or is it a turn/twist?

The wire colors might indicate a heater fan switch.
Or they might be a push/pull hazzard switch.

Where do the wires originate? Try to find the same color
wires in the car attached to some component and you will
better know the function of the switch.

Flashers/Hazard would be nice! I noticed it doesn't have any switch for that.

I think it is a push button. I couldn't get it to turn. Strange thing is I don't have any place in the dash where that would have been mounted. At least I can start to track it down. Thanks guys!

Carefully grab the slotted part and try to pull out(a little!) If all goes well, you'll have flashers.

Hazard switch, given the wiring and what I can discern from the colour of wires. Should have 6 or 7 wires coming off it: green, purple, light green with brown trace, light green with slate, green/red and green/white.

It is a pull-switch. Should be mounted between the speedo and tach. The slot we're looking atin the photo should be where the flasher-bulb is located. I don't recall a metal mounting plate for it though. Usually just mounts throughthe dash with a chrome slotted nut on the outside if memory serves.

Too many wires. It's that red knob thingie with the triangle inna center, twixt clock 'n rev counter.

That sounds like one of those new electro-mechanical gizmos now commonly know as fly-by-wire.

Sure looks like the pull style hazard flasher.
Try using a pair of needle nose pliers to pull out the notched grey piece. It would be pull not push.
