What is this car?

Hey all,

Came across this picture recently, taken in New Jersey, there is a car in the picture that looks vaguely British/European possibly (front row, second from right). Yes I know... it is very small in the picture, still though any ideas? The only idea I could think of initially was Triumph TR3 but that back end doesn't look quite right. And does anyone know where in New Jersey this field is?

[apologies, I have way too much curiosity for my own good sometimes, and just love stuff like this]

It's an MGA. The door's open and it's missing it's left front fender. The shape of the rear fender and the windshield surround give it away.

Sherlock,

It is an MGA. Something didn't look right in the front end, though. The rear fender and the windshield are correct. The front end is too high for an MGA.. it apparently has a folded frame or something leaned against the front of the car that distorts the image... my guess is the frame buckled, giving it a TR3 look in the front, at least from this picture angle. Great shot, love seeing all the old cars begging to be rebuilt. Don't tell me where this picture was taken..... I'd be on my way there now on a rescue mission.

I could only guess that it is North Jersey and probably NW. Would like to know myself.

That really looks a lot like the area I live in, but I do not recognize the actual site.
Tried to blow up the image to verify if any of those cars had NJ plates, but no luck.
Do you have any idea of the original source of the photo?
(and I'd agree with the others...an MGA)

I know who took the picture, I could always ask if they remember

Anyone want to buy the poor old MGA... or any other of the poor old cars on the lot...

Looks like a mow-a-round to me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'd love to have one of those two Torino fastbacks in the center. There's a Galaxie next to the MGA, just the rear drivers side corner is visible on the extreme right edge of the photo, looks like a 68 or a 69. My last car before the TR6 was a 68 Galaxie fastback, what a car that was, should have kept her.

What? No one wants the Pinto? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

The first car I ever had really die on me in a big way was a Pinto exactly like that one, same color and all. It was my mom's. Oil pump crapped out one summer night coming back from the Jersey shore, leaving me stranded in Perth Amboy at 2am, not a nice area if you're familiar with NJ. Woke up a buddy to come pick me up, he was not happy. Had the car towed back the next morning, peaked inside the oil filler cap and the cam lobes were completely gone, worn away to nothing. My mom was actually pleased, she was looking for an excuse to dump the car, she went out and bought a brand new truck.

Many of those old Pintos had cam problems. The actual issue with the 2.0 ohc Pinto engine was the cam followers (they were "soft" and would kill the cam lobes). I bought two cars like this (wiped-out cams). Swapped cams and followers in both for new, improved style. Gave one to my sister and kept one...got excellent service from both.
I drove my Pinto to the Jersey Shore a lot, by the way.
I agree about the area you broke down in....creepy neighborhood!

Wow, thats interesting info, after all these years I just assumed the pump had started to die and there was insufficient pressure to get oil to the cam. The motor never actually siezed or anything, just started losing power and then shortly after quit altogether, but it would still spin on the starter. If I had known the bottom end was probably OK I would have done the work to the upper end and kept the car running. Oh well, mom seemed pretty intent on using it as an excuse to justify buying her new truck.

I actually sort of liked the car, rack and pinion steering, nice bucket seats, floor shifter, I thought it was a decent little economy car for the time. My dad even fitted ours with a set of Keystone classic wheels and nice white letter tires, so my mom was really stylin!
