Not really, and really, I don't want to know.

What I do need to know is the correct way to install the rectangular motor mounts in my TR4. I never liked the round ones very much. The engine always seemed a little "wobbly" to me on them, so I got the (older?) rectangular mounts. I think they were used on the 3's.

Since the stud-bolt that bisects the mount is not offset from front to back, I suppose you could mount it any way you like, but I'm sure that there must be a correct way to do this. Should the rectanglular mount be mounted with it's long side vertically, or horizontally, front to back, back to front, side to side...

I'm making myself dizzy.

A pic sure would help. Anyone?
 
vertically on my 4. only way it will fit AFAIK.
 
I use engine mounts from a Volvo 2L which are round but much stronger than the limbo Triumph mounts.


The square-type mounts I used parallel with the metal sides to the block.

We use round ones in the race car, so I'm not sure if this method will work with the square ones, but with the round ones, install the one motor mount on the driver side and leave the passenger side off. With the trans attached to the motor slide it into the engine bay, when the motor is about lined up on the driver side mount (but still not resting down on it), have someone hold the outside of the passenger side motor mount so the stud reaches into the frame and to the block (it doesn't have to be square). Slowly lower the motor and everything will fall into place. With two people, this method should take no more than a few minutes. Hope this helps in some way.

Also, we use a torque reaction arm but mount it on the opposite side that it came from the factory so it works under acceleration.

The mounts I used are actually TR4 A motor mounts, so my error, they are a "later" version. Anyway, I got the engine in the frame and mounted. Thankfully, I only had to wrestle with getting it in the frame by myself, and not into a tiny little engine bay. It really was not that bad, at least nothing a little reverse engineering couldn't solve. I simply reversed the motor on the engine stand and I rolled it right into place. Attaching the bolts to the underside of the mounts was the most difficult part due to the limited access. One-quarter turn at a time. Today I'm attaching the transmission.

I'll get some photo's up later.

The easiest thing to do is to use the volvo tranny mounts from a 244 they are larger in diameter but other wise the same..

BTW, I just installed those new 4A mounts, too. Sort of a hassle because if you knock the engine off both mounts and have no hoist handy, that could be a problem. I kept one mount loose but still fastened with a nut while working the opposite side (with the radiator hoses and other "holdups" removed), and that worked, with some grease and other tricks. Then following someone's advice here I made extra spacers with thick washers that I cut a slit into so they'd slide over the engine mount bolt under each engine front plate foot. That gave me another 1/4 clearance for my fan extension over the steering rack.

I supported the engine and just moved the engine stand from the rear to the front. Instead of bolting it to the transmission flange at the rear, I bolted it to the front engine plate.

WOW, beaut.

OK, but those spring towers look different. Did you get new ones or rebuild those in some fashion?

It's a brand new RATCO frame. So far everything fits just right. The old frame was mostly rust and bondo and has gone to frame heaven.
 
I wondered the same thing Chris, but the guy that did the work for me cc'd everything and tells me the CR is 11:1. I have some pictures of before and you can see where a good bit of material was removed. This was a "virgin" head having never been milled before. I have no reason to doubt him and he knows his stuff having been national SCCA champ in "E" production a few times over here.

I suppose I could cc it myself and run the numbers to check it, but I'm a little tired of all the expensive machine work. So maybe at the next rebuild.
