What is max ID of rear drum?

Should be marke don them. Most of the time the bevel on the edge serves as a good wear guide. When it's been turned out it's at max. Drums are cheap na dif you are just cleaning them up I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like you have far bigger fish to fry anyway. I wouldn't waste time on the drums right now.
 
If you are changing to the later back plates and cylinders you will have to machine or grind off a bit on the edge of the drum. Also may have a bit of interference on the bearing housing and the back of the stud's in the hb should be relieved a bit. Not all that difficult to get correctly proportioned brakes with disc front's.

So if I decide to go with new drums for my BE will I still need to trim for clearance with later backing plates? Do new drums eliminate bearing / hub issues?

The drums need to be ground a very small amount...an angle grinder works well for this project. I've had a couple of drums that fit without scraping, but most do.

Thanks Rut. Rear end now out and on a dolly. On the list to do and fix. Need more room in the garage. An ungainly and painful thing to trip over. Utility trailer will be making a trip to our cottage soon. Rear end may join the BE Bonnet and seats in storage there.

Easy way to do it is mount them backwards and turn as you grind or wait until the car is running and do it then.

Good idea Rut! Didn't think of that and had a friend chuck them up in a lathe. Your solution sound's much simpler.
