What is it? Counter under hood

Just picked up a 76 MGB to drive while restoring the 78. It has a counter in front of the heater box reading 020. Does this have something to do with engine life expectancy? If so how can it be accurate depending on how you take care of your engine?

A picture would help...are you sure it is not a pressure regulator indicator attached to the fuel line? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Catalytic converter service hours - I think.

BAH!

DPO schtupped an engine hour counter in it, a boat accessory most likely. Never saw a factory standard B with any kind of "counter" under-bonnet. Photos would be of assistance.

Late model cars have them (mine doesn't though - PO removed alot of stuff), Bentley manual even has a pic of one.

BL put a service interval under th hood of some cars - an option...getting kinda rare....useless except to collector

I want one. Anyone willing to give one up?

If I have one, Kenny - its yours...we'll have to look though

GAH... Th'things ya learn... and wish not to.

Mia Culpa! Thank you, gentlemen fer straightenin' me out.

Hmmm, first baited breath, now trolling.
I don't think I want any shark.
I've seen those "timers" under the bonnett of a few TR6s, but never any MGBs. cool.
Little tan box, right? I thought maybe it was for some screwed up type of rallying.

Banjo,

You made me have a memory flashback. Now I know why I like MGs. I was a rally Master in college. That's where the mania comes from. Have to get to chair and sit in dark to remember the great times riding around in the dark.!!!!

Well, I will be dipped...never saw one! Thanks for the pic, stewart. And I have to tell you, every time I see one of your posts and see your car in the sig line, I admire it...that is really a beautiful car! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

NOW I remember! I ~have~ seen those. It's a Smiths, red lettering... I'd completely forgotten 'em. Thanks Stewart!

I would have guessed DPO myself though, same as Doc....my 1980 does not have one, and it's stock. Never heard of it myself, and I've been around MGBs for some years now. It would have been a dealer-installed item?

It was a factory thing. I don't think it went on too many cars, only seen a couple of 'em so equipped. So few I didn't remember 'em /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Once I saw the photo, it conjured up a non-working speedo and a "wild goose chase" to correct. The trans. gear drive has a different ratio, so you can't just "bypass" it and have an accurate speedo either, IIRC.

my car has one of them things too... I always thought it was associated with the "life expectancy" of the EGR Valve....
