What is going on with this con rod?

I pulled all of the pistons on my engine this weekend and I noticed something strange about 1 of them

why the hole?

That is strange, is this the first time the engine has been apart? Looks like a bullet hole, giving a new meaning to bullet proof.

That is one beat up looking connecting rod. Might be time to look for a new one. Ya think?

All of mine have a hole like that in them - no idea why though.

Maybe it began life as a spanner wrench of sorts?

It really does look a little banged up to me and there is NO good reason for that hole to be there.

But Steve, only one of out six???

Well, I guess that they didn't need to remove that much weight.

The Rimmer brothers web site shows the con. rod with the hole in it. Perhaps this was standard for some sets of rods. Someone may have mixed and matched rods in that engine.

So, Brosky, I was looking at your site and all of your rods have holes there too. What were you thinking?

It (the holey con rod) came from the factory that way! Some time around 72 they were modified with the same part number.
When I pulled apart the engine which came with my Herald I found 1 con rods with hole and 3 with out holes.

Apparently your engine was also rebuilt sometime in history and a new con rod was needed so they used the later version.

Here is the answer I got from John Kipping regarding the holey rod: (originally discussed on the Yahoo Herald forum)

<span style="font-weight: bold">Sorry for late reply, shouldn't be a problem to reuse a mixed set as in they are all the same part number. If you were really keen weighing would be good but not really necessary.

Brian,

Obviously I wasn't thinking very well. I honestly did not remember those holes being in mine. Now that was rather stupid of me, wasn't it? I guess the sight of one all by itself threw me off and the dead brain cells caught up with me. My bad!
