What I have done so far.

I have taken the thermostat out (yes, I know--but this is just a test). I have replaced the temperature sending unit (found a new one in the box of parts the PO gave me). Flushed out the block and radiator (no blockage). No water in the oil and no oil in the water. Drove the GT down the road and back (4 miles) the temp guage went up to hot. I got home and had the radiator cap loose so I could get to the water immediately. Measured the temp and it was 180 degrees with the guage pegged on hot. I inow suspect the guage is bad or the wiring is shorting (maybe because I moved something when I replaced the coke cable.) I am going to buy an inexpensive manual temp guage and sender and install to see if it gets hot. Any other suggestions. Oh the motor does not smell hot or seem to get hot and the water does not overflow.

Could be the bimetal voltage stablilizer. Is the fuel gauge acting flaky too? You can usually pickup used temp gauges for $5-10 at swap meets. Might want to try that instead of buying something new. Although there's no guarantee they'll be any better that what you have.

I want to get a mechanical one (use to have one drag racing) for diagnosis purposes. That way I can tell if the engine is really heating up or not and can change out the unit after I'm done back to the original.

Digital laser temp guns only run about $30 or so these days... Might be worth the investment... especially if you see the need to test the tempurature of anything aqain anytime soon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
