TR6 What do you think?

I worked out a pretty good deal on a sweet '73 Tr6. I don't think the
owner knows that much about them but he seems to think there's a problem
with the differential. (It whines he says.)
I took it out for a spin and it seems to shift fine with reverse. I must drive it
75 miles to get her home. I thought maybe I'd fill the differential with
gear oil or at least check it.
The owner says he doesn't know if it'll go that far with that whine.
Is the differential as easy to fill as my Tr3. (Unscrew the plug and pour it in.)
I do plan to have a professional look at the differential but I think I might
be able to figure it out.
I'm hoping its just a leak and maybe a new gasket might solve it.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You will probably need something to pump the gear oil in, but otherwise not a big deal. If it is just noisy from lack of fluid, filling it up should quiet it down, and it would probably be OK for that trip.

What I use (just this morning in fact):

Harbor Freight Oil Suction Gun

Do you have a spare differential?
If it explodes into pieces will you be able to get a replacement?
Do you know any way to get a whining differential stripped and rebuilt?

In the UK, the cost of a flat-bed haul of 75 miles would be insignificant compared to locating a good replacement unit.

Check the lube in both the trans and diff. I doubt a 75 mile trip will make that much difference to either at this point. If its the diff, the whine may get a if louder. Bearings are all ready scoured so they will need replacing. Easier buy another diff.
