What do I have?

Your car did not come from the factory with that engine number on the block. It was replaced at some time early in its life. Its a 1973-1974 overdrive engine. With the switch to RB cars the engine number did change so it couldn't have been a factory installed engine.

What might have happened is the engine was replaced at the dealer when they didn't have any "gold seal" replacements in stock. They might have had that engine laying around the parts room or shop. It could have also come from an independent British car shop too.

Took the words right outta my mouth! LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

It sounds like this engine is a prime candidate for a Dual SU HIF4 conversion too...that would be what it came with. I bet a PO swapped the engine and tranny to get an overdrive.

OH, welcome to the Forum, too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

David - you & I are on the right track...didn't think about a dealer stuffing an engine that was laying around the shop it it...makes sense though as the "Gold Seal" engine I was talking about would have its specific number plate attached...
