What coil upgrade did you use?

Morning all from 4 deg New England with 5" of ice & snow!

Anyway I sold a pair of extra fogs to a fellow TR owner & am looking to put the cash toward a coil upgrade on my TR250.

I already have Magnecor 8.5 wires, plan on keeping the dist stock with points & plugs, but want to add a new higher output coil.
I know all about the Lucas Sports & Bosch Super Blue. Has anyone used a Mallory or Accell from a speed shop?


I'm not so worried about originality as I am performance & local availability.


Also, can't remember, the 250 & early 6's use an internal ballast?

I used a Pertronix coil with the matching electronic ignition, but now that I'm swapping out the entire distributor, to try a new one with a different curve and points/condenser, I'll be going with the Lucas Sport coil. I've read all positives on those, both here and on 6-Pack.
 
Ya had to bring up a bad subject about
Crypty, didn't you?

The Crypt Car eats coils for breakfast.
About 20 to 25 miles per coil.

I guess I better have 3 or 4 spare coils
available for when David arrives next week.

I just feel it in my bones that Crypty is gonna
play DPO Pedros' starter motor to call David's
bluff on getting this TR operational. Every other
elec. component and wire, bulb, etc is brand new
and functional.

Pedro's starter is gonna be the winning hand I
am afraid.

For whater ever it is worth, when Classic Motorsports did their electronic ignition testing in the March 2006 issue they found that the electronic ignition made a nice difference but the coil did not.

I'm sure that will stir up opinions on the board, but you might want to be a tad cautious on what sort of gain you'll see compared to a healthy stock coil.
 
The best thing you can do when replacing a coil is get one with a known track record. The Bosch blue, Lucas Sport, and Pertronix Epoxy coils are all good reliable units. Remeber that what you REALLY want is consistnet performance and longevity, not the ultimate hottest spark. If you really want the hottest spark, you'll pay for it in the long run with burned contacts, burned coil leads, and generally overstressed contacts throughout the ignton system. You'll probably not see a difference on a dyno run between a $40 coil or a $100 coil - unless yours is damaged goods!
 
I am running a Lucas gold coil, pertronix electronics with a multiple discharge spark unit and have had one year on all and no problems
 
Hi Gary:

The TR250 coil does not have a ballast resistor as standard - although no guarentee someone has not added one later. You can check by putting a volt meter across the coil. If with ignition on and points closed, you are reading full 12 volts, then no ballast. If around 6-9 volts, then there is a ballast installed.

Ive got a Lucus Sport on mine - never had a problem.

Thanks all, I really am replacing my coil as I don't know the history of it & figure I'll throw it in the boot as a spare along with extra pts, cond, rotor & cap.

I may go the electronic ignition, but I had a prob on my '73 Landy when the elec ign crapped out. I think it was a pertronix; this was 6-7 yrs ago, so not absolutley sure. (actually it was a Luminition)

To be sure the electronic ign does help, esp if you have dist. wear; but they usually either work or they don't. Can't run a match book between it like on pts to check them. I actually was still running points on my Grady I/O, don't want to have to troubleshoot an ignition in 10' seas!!
