What coil to use for Mallory 2332001

If you are running a Mallory in your TR3-4A, what coil are you using? I have a 3ohm Pertronix that I used with their ignitor and assume it's fine for the Mallory. Is it?

Probably depends on were you want to go from there and if you want it remote mounted.

Remote mounted is OK. Use is for a fast street 4, might convert the Mallory to electronic down the road. 233-2001 is a dual-point non-vacuum advance for the TR2-4A and many other lbc as well.

Is 3ohm (non-ballasted) good to go? TR4s didn't use a ballast resistor.

Mine an unilite model and still haven't settled on a coil, only know it will be remote located.

I'm running the Unilite as well, it requires a ballast. For the coil, I chose the Mallory 29450 mostly because it's internally resisted.

It's worked like a charm since day one.

I mounted the coil on the flat spot on the inner fender right below the master cylinder:

I've used the Lucas sport coil for many years with my Mallory dual point in my TR3A. I recently replaced it with a nonballasted points only 40,000 V coil that I found at Checker Auto; I don't remember the brand but can look tomorrow if interested.

Hi Peter,

I'm using Mallory coil with the dual point Mallory dizzy on my TR4. Works fine, but does require a ballast. I would think the Lucas Sport coil would work as well, but don't know if it needs a ballast or not. You can find more info on Mallory's website (www.mrgasket.com)

Eventually I plan to convert the dual point to full electronic ignition with Mallory's module for that purpose. At that time, the coil will need to be changed. There one version for use with either point or electronic ignition (and a CD box) up to about 6000 rpm, and another that's strictly electronic, but usable at higher rpms.

Alan, I've run an unballasted Lucas sport coil in my TR3A for about 20 yrs with the Mallory and I think I'm only on my second replacement. Point replacement has been normal.

Its fine to run an non-balast coil with the Mallory. Any additional resistance is ok and won't hurrt anything. The Pertronix 3 Ohm or Sport 2.8 Ohm are fair examples. With the additional resistance they still work fine, and will also work with a Pertronix kit, which requires 3 Ohms.

Alan,
I was thinking of changing to full electronic instead of points too. But is an electronic Mallory better than an electronic Lucas dist? What is the gain from using Mallory? So for now, I'll tune the dual point I guess.

I have a Pertronix that I'll put in the 3A so probably use the Pertronix coil with that and take your suggestion and look at the Mallory coil for the dual-point.

I use the Chrome Mallory Coil with a ballast resistor on a Mallory dual point. However I will be converting to the Mallory Unilite kit 562 which still uses a ballast resistor.
I tried to use the Pertronix kit Moss sells for the Mallory dual point but it just would not work in my application.

Both Mallory and Pertronix produce an points replacement, electronic conversion for the Mallory dual-point. The one for the Lucas distributor is a different number.
