What Can We Do For Our Soldiers?

I was listening (yes I do - sometimes)
to the radio,& hearing different ideas on what
our soldiers deem important in care packages.
Can anyone share on what we can do to help
them while they're serving their country?
We have a local "Socks For Soldiers" effort.
I just think that this feels appropiate on this day.

Just remember, they are extremely appreciative people and anything we do to support them, even if it's just a card or letter, shows we care. I remember being over seas and my wife sending me a little record made in a recording booth of her and my two little sons talking. Just to hear their voice was a feeling that's hard to express. I carried that little record with me everywhere I went and I still have it today. It's one of the most valuable items I own. PJ

If anyone wants, I have a prayer we offer at each of our services, from our <span style="font-style: italic"> Book of Common Prayer </span> . Happy to pass it on; just let me know.

At our local Commissary on our local Air Force base, the Boy Scouts often stand outside in front and ask people to pick up items for the troops. They hand shoppers a list of common items that are needed and appreciated in a dessert environment. Some of the things I can recall from the list include: Hard candy, nuts, beef jerky, baby wipes (It can get very dusty over there and clean water for washing is not always handy), hand cleaner, note pads, socks, t-shirts, underwear, Gel insoles, etc. I did a quick Google search and came up with this List

[ <span style="font-style: italic">We add, "...and their families" </span>] Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." [BCP page 823]
 
If you send any of these things overseas, make sure to get the Military Priority boxes from the post office. They are cheaper and bigger than regular flat rate boxes.

I know I saw it somewhere, thought it was here - there is a "program" named something like "Smiles for Soldiers"? As I recall, the thought was that anytime you see a person from the Armed Forces, you are to give them a smile. I wish I could find the information I saw before, it was rather moving. I am hoping someone from here may know what I'm referring to and post a link.
 
You guys would know better than me, but don't these types of things need to be sent via a "known" entity? I would not think Joe blow could have a package delivered to a solder.
 
rlwhitetr3b, you can go on line and "adopt" an individual solder who would share what ever you send with his unit, weve sent socks they seem to be a most needed item, and other things as well, you can also find a list of things they need on line, side story...a few weeks back i went to my doctors office pending my shoulder surgery when a man walked in just after me, he was wearing a ball cap across the front it read.."uss indianapolis" he chatted with the receptionist for a moment then turned picked up a news paper and ambeled over to sit in the chair next to me, i couldnt resist asking him if hed been on that ship, "yes son" was his reply, i stood up shook his hand and simply said thank you for your service, i didnt ask any other questions about the events of the sinking, i was amazed when he told me few people in his life had ever done what id just done, that is to just recognize his service, i look at it this way, if a person didnt want you to know that they had served our country they wouldnt be walking around wearing a black ball cap with the name of thier ship in gold letters across the front of it, any time i see one of these guys or gals i give them recognition, youd be surprised how much they appreciate it.
