Let's say I have a magic wand and I could grant you a business wish. What business would you start and why? I'm not talking about pie in the sky multi million dollar start up stuff, my wand isn't that powerful.

Tattoo removal business. I see a lot of them that look like the people will be sorry later on.

Also, Dunkin' Donuts store anywhere in Ireland. The local coffee is terrible there and most of the tourists I speak to agree (and I'm not even a coffee drinker).

Nial, you start a Dunkin Donuts in Ireland and I'll start one in England! They don't know how to make a decent cup of coffee either! :highly_amused: PJ

I'd like you to wave your wand and make me a U.S. Senator. I have a feeling I'd be very good at being bought off, plus I could use all that time off to travel and pursue my other interests.

I know a couple of 'em, does that count? Actually the ones we know are stand up guys to the Nth.

Geez...No - it doesn't count. If you're not gonna gimme what I want under your hypothetical question, then just put me down for a Dunkin Donuts like everyone else. :disgust: :jester:

I'd open a studio-shop-gallery. It'd be a cross of Rick Dales shop, The Antique archeology shop from the guys on american pickers, and an art studio. It'd be everything from paintings to funky old cars and bikes to steam punk stuff, and anything else different and creative. I think Watkins Glen would be my place of choice to open it. lot's of tourist traffic.Or Ithaca. That is a very diverse town, especially for around here.Walking in to my shop would be a bit like falling down the rabbit hole in Alice In Wonderland. Somewhere I could create, socialize, be surrounded by interesting people and things, and maybe even earn a living.
Wave away! I'd be crazy enough to do it if I had the financial backing.

I'm talking about a real business that could make real money right off the bat. Some type of need that isn't currently being met, new service or new twist on an old idea.

We were discussing today at work, how many years we each had till retirement. It just made me think again about what I'm doing. I'm grateful to be employed. even more so at a job that is generally enjoyable with folks I get along with. But there's a voice somewhere inside me that says things like "I'm sick of going to a job every day to make someone else rich" Or, "I have all these ideas for stuff to make" or What am I going to have to look back on when I'm further down the road?" Maybe it's the start of an early mid-life crisis.
I'm just sick of routine. Sick of being a cog. I wanna walk into my world every morning , into a space that is alive, and be inspired to make something new.
You are looking for something creative that will be profitable. that's just good business. I can't fault you at that. I'm probably a bit off the mark with my crazy ideas.

If I knew I'd be doing it myself! Actually Ben's suggestion has a lot of merit, especially considering the work in metal that you are so good at..... Think about it.

It wouldn't fly down here. Ben, I hear what you're saying, however; Kelly and I are in a VERY unique situation to be able to do what we are doing. That being said, we don't know for how long, thus the idea of something else. My problem is I'm stuck out here in a world of my own choosing with no cable and COMPLETELY out of touch with what's going on or in demand in the real world. I've had several good invention ideas only to be beaten to the punch. A regualr job doesn't seem possible as I'm now "too old" or overqualified. Consider yourself blessed.

Billy, I understand how good it is to have a steady paycheck. That's why I'm still doing what I'm doing. I am very thankful for what I have. But you know what it's like to have a head full of ideas, and be stuck in your current situation because the grass is plenty green right where you are.
Keep thinking up ideas. You'll find one that will work. there's gotta be a nitch to fill that is just waiting for you.

.

Notta clue what that's like. Had lots of fertilizer, but never any grass, well; at least none that hadn't been eaten yet...

I learned early on when to cash in me chips so to speak.

Maybe do a Vintage Paint and Restoration Shop that like some places you pay what you can or pay the price or generously pay and donate to keep the business going. In the same process use it as a school for young people to learn the trade but who need financial help and the owner pays costs as students work for less to cover tuition parts, and educators

No car stuff, I'm DONE!

I was gonna say how about a shop that installs cell phone jammers in cars. It's a service many parents with new drivers would like. It's a service a lot of folks like me would like to see in all cars......

LOL, most folks here can't afford the phone service much less a service that makes it not work.
