It may a very obvious item, but they arrived today as part of a head gasket kit. I don't remember these coming off the 18GH. Apologies if it is obvious. Just would hate to rebuild and leave these out if they are needed.
Of course they're needed else they wouldn't be there....

IF I use them? I assume then that they are optional or if I was doing a valve job....
 
Barry, if you aren't noticing any smoke at startup, or under de-cel, I wouldn't worry about them. If you are, or plan on doing a valve job, use them then. I use a special valve guide on all of mine that takes a different, umbrella style seal. There is no point in putting them on an exhaust valve, although some folks do.

There is a groove about 3/8 of an inch from the end of the valve, is that where they go?
As I said, they weren't present on removal for me to notice so I'll slap them on. The motor has not been started yet to notice any smoke anywhere, still about 1/4 way in on the sleeping B checklist.
Slow, but very sure.

Those don't look like stem seals, and why are there EIGHT of 'em?!?!

...I'm confused.
 
OK, they go below the keeper.
I'll put em in the box for the machine shop and not worry about them.

The only seals for the 1800's were on the intakes only IIRC. And they were more like re-enforced O-rings than conventional "Valve Seals".


Barry, you're right: put 'em in th' box and deliver the kit to the shop.
 
Of course you only use them on the intakes, Doc, but I generally see 8 seals included in the head sets. I could never figure out why, either. I prefer the "umbrella" type myself.

No that's the valve keeper groove, just slip the o ring over the top of the valve stem and slip it down on the shaft (it's a tight fit, don't worry it will go one with some encouragement, this is of course after the valve is installed in the guide and just before you install the springs. I only use them on the intakes as well, a seal on a exhaust valve is a moot point.
