What are these holes for?

While removing the carpet from the car I came across two holes in the rear deck behind the seats. I have since plugged/covered the holes. The holes aren't much smaller than the wood covers. What are these holes for? I presume they are factory.

Not factory. Some DPO's ingenious endeaver to ruin a perfectly good panel.
I would find a more permanent solution to repairing the holes. Wood doesn't seal well and retains moisture which could cause worse problems down the road.
If you have access to a welder, I'd put a good patch in place.
 
Perhaps your differential mount was repaired through these holes. I have seen it done from the top of the panel. Pretty bad place to place speakers.
 
I'd bet on the speaker mounting excuse in spite of the P-poor location tho, Bill. And indeed the integrity of the tub is somewhat compromised with those holes. They need patches welded in 'em.
 
I decided to try the SEM equivalent for floorboard and "dogleg" panels on the MGB. With rivets and care it came out beautifully. I did do some impromptu "Destructive Testing" of the stuff with both steel and aluminum faux "panels" before the actual deed. I gotta say the stuff is amazing.
 
Well, that's obviuosly not good. I assumed factory because the carpet that came out appeared to be made specifically to account for the holes since it incorporated some type of foil backing to protect against the elements. I'll have to try and track it down and post a pic of it and the holes without my make shift plugs.
 
No need to post additional pictures. I refreshed my memory of what everything looked like two years ago when I stripped the carpet out. DPO glued cardboard and then plastic over that onto the carpet before glueing the carpet down. After closer inspection of the holes (without the wood panel) I can locate screw holes that were likley used to mount speakers. What a bad idea that was. This kinda stuff makes me wonder about the rest of my car. I'll have to post some pictures of other things I found that make me wonder what kind of an accident this baby may have been in.
 
Soup, remember that this area of sheet metal had that thick tar-like insulation glued over it. This, of course, will need to be removed using lots of elbow grease and a sharp, stiff scraper. I removed all of mine before welding in new floor boards. Also, check the underside to make sure no undercoating was sprayed there. All this to be able to weld in new panels. You can get thin plates (20 gauge) of weldable sheet steel from Lowes and have it mig-ed in place. Not that big a deal.
 
Thanks Bill, I did notice that thick tar and was afraid I would have to remove it. Having it repaired is will be the easy part, like everything else its the preparation that stinks. I Just can't figure out why someone would cut this area for speakers :wall:

Ain't it fun stripping out carpet glued directly to
floor, tranny tunnel, rear deck, etc? DPO Pedro
did the same thing. I also found strange things
and finally figured the car had been in a pretty severe
wreck- passenger rear.

Post some of the oddities you found. Here's my
biggest surprise under the glued carpet:
