Yesterday was a nice day here in Denver and I decided to take my Bugeye out for a spin. I drove up a nice twisty canyon road west of Denver into the mountains (towards Central City & Blackhawk....two of our gambling towns). It was a very fun drive....I got to really see how my Bugeye handles with the Frontline suspension (it's awesome, BTW!). Unfortunately, the fun soon came to an end. My temp gauge started getting twitchy. In the 4 years I have owned and driven my Bugeye this gauge has been rock solid, so I monitored it, but the car seemed to run jut fine. Then I started smelling something burning. I pulled over and lifted the hood to find a small fire by the battery! Somehow a wire either shorted out or came loose and caught itself on fire. I put it out ASAP, but it looked bad.....lots of melted wires. I managed to do a quick roadside repair of the hot wire to the junction block so I could start the car and all was well again.
I started back up the hill and drove another 5 or 6 miles before I noticed oil dripping into the passenger footwell. I again pulled over and popped the hood.....I didn't notice it earlier, but the fire also melted the capillary tube for the oil pressure gauge and I spewed most of the oil in the engine all over the place. I decided to coast into Blackhawk and call for help.
My dad came up and we patched the oil leak and started home again. I didn't get 100 feet before the engine died. The electric fuel pump gave up the ghost....probably related to the fire, but I'm not sure. I used to have the mechanical pump still attached to the block, but for whatever reason I decided to remove it a month or so ago. We had to go back home to get the original pump and reinstall it (about an hour each way).
We finally got it patched up enough to drive it home. What started out as a leisurely hour-long drive turned into a 9 hour ordeal. Luckily the damage is superficial....I just need to replace some wires and clean up the oily mess that is now my engine compartment & undercarriage.

Glad it wasn't worse! I guess we've all had those drives at some point.
