Wham bang! Now what?

neighbor got his hands on an '04 Altima with a six-speed manual. IMHO that had to have been specially ordered when new. And likely more expense than a slushbox.

I suspect that manual boxes will be fewer and fewer as time goes on. I recently got a used manual BMW 3 series GT (diesel -approx 60 miles per UK gallon) however the auto gets more mpg but I couldn't convince myself I was old enough for an auto yet!

Good for ya! I keep tellin' Herself I'll drive manuals until I need to be lowered into the driver's seat with a winch after using a walker to get to the garage.

The Benz here is an automatic, I will drive one of the British cars before it, most of the time. The MG has been getting a workout lately.

The Beamer has auto with paddle shifters
Love it
It drives my wife nuts when I use em

Right now my only manuals are in my pick-ups. I am seriously considering an older Miata, a Solstice, or possibly a 90s manual Camaro for my daily driver.

Not sure exactly what space requirements you have are, but when I had to replace my 1992 Ford commuter car, I ended up getting a Mazda2 - it was used in impeccable condition but I was somewhat skeptical about the small 1500CC engine and how it would drive...half a dozen other potential buyers walked away from it when they saw it had a 5 speed stick. I was (and still am) very pleasantly surprised by how good a driving car it is - not much in amenities but it has 6 air bag system, pretty good traction control system, speed sensitive electric power steering and whatever Mazda did with the suspension on this thing I approve of wholeheartedly. It will boogie around corners like crazy (came with 15 inch wheels where most cars this size have 13s and 14s) and they claim almost 100HP out of the 1500 engine without any forced induction - it does have some variable valve timing tricks but also has a real timing chain instead of a belt, and the slave cylinder for the clutch is NOT hidden inside the bellhousing like so many newer cars do. I'm almost afraid that if I ever get the MGB finished I'll find out the little Mazda will still drive and corner better. And 36MPG on combined city/highway driving certainly is a blessing with a 60 mile round trip just for work every day.

I don't believe the Mazda2 is sold in the states anymore but I think the Toyota Yaris is the same car just rebadged. Last year when I was overseas, I did see lots of the Mazda 2's. Sounds like you are a satisfied Mazda driver!
