I've noticed all of the stuff going on in the Pacific.

area, are you prepared?I know that I'm not,& need to get
things in order.

Janet and I were talking the other day while watching some of the footage from the quake. She said something to the effect that we don't have a plan to get in touch with each other, or more importantly, meet at a certain predetermined location, in the event of some sort of catastrophe. That may be pretty obvious, but how many of us have that pre-arranged?

We have a rudimentary "disaster" plan and emergency contact procedures for immediate family. Includes escape routes to get out of the house in case of fire, etc., and two-way radios in each car (handheld CBs) for communication if regular lines are out. We also have an emergency meeting point about 5 miles outside the city, on high ground (of course!). Also, we carry emergency supplies in our cars. Just basic stuff, mostly.

A good friend of mine stockpiles enough food, etc., to live for six months, independently. He obviously doesn't work on LBCs because his 2-car garage is FULL of survival stuff.

It's very wise to have an emergency escape plan from your home, neighborhood and general vicinity. Most State websites have emergency evacuation procedures, evacuation routes, and emergency shelter locations posted. It's good to know this stuff. Simply discussing disaster preparedness with your family and agreeing on a few simple procedures could prove very helpful if an emergency arises.

If events get really bad and require more planning that that, I'm toast, I recon. :yesnod: :cryin:

We're not prone to earthquakes or flooding at my place, however, there is a nuclear power plant about 35 miles NE of here (North Anna Nuclear Power Staton).

I'd rather not think about another nuke disaster right now . . .

vagt6, sounds as if you have a very good plan, after observing the behavior of some people during catastrophes here in america i have also included objects to assist in our personal protection.

I live real near the Diablo Canyon Power plant. They have supplied the area with sirens, and test them frequently in order to periodically renew our collective anxiety . Due to recent events, P.G E spokesmen have been assuring us that both the nuclear unit and the stored spent fuel pose no danger to the public. They claim they have it under control, which is a relief since the plant sits next to the sea on an earthquake fault. Trying to be a helpful citizen, I shot off a letter offering to store some of their nuclear waste on my property inland, and requested a bumper sticker for my auto as well. So far no response. Will keep you posted. --elrey

Radiation? Yikes!! First things first? Rodger. Time for plan A, the protective libation before plan B is effected. :thirsty: --elrey

As I work the new job I have learned about the New Madrid (Missouri) fault line. It is at least 20 times the size of the San Andreas fault, strikes every 200 years, and GULP, last struck in 1811. Last time it struck it rang church bells in Boston and knocking chimneys down in New York. It caused the Mississippi river to run the wrong direction for a few hours and created a 20 mile long lake. It shifted the route of the river and made the river non navigable. Lets add to fear by the fact it sits astride many of the nations power grids to include eletricity and natural gas. Nothing made up here.

Didnt mean to scare you but I know I knew nothing about this until I started working the issue

patr8, i understand your consternation! the federal penalty to be meated out for being what so ever involved with and or about the mention, conveying, dealing,or otherwise promote, conceal, transport, and or print "T-shirts" displaying the word "MISSIPPPI" or its numerous and or common sign of course is a capital offence. :hammer:

Actually , how about the major fault lines that run up through the middle. That's how the Mississippi was formed. Still a big one that goes right thru Memphis!

OK,
I have temporarily saved the world by correcting Mississippi. And yes, that is the fault line I am talking about. 1.2 million people displaced, power disrupted to 23 stated for months/years... FEMA is doing a multi-state exercise on it this year.

Oh, well in THAT case, we've got NOTHING to worry about!

NO ONE in this area cares or knows about the New Madrid fault. Nothing is built or being built to earthquake specs and the fault is mentioned after every big earthquake and how we should be prepared yata yata ya, blah blah blah!!! Gonna be a rude awakining for many. Well most of the people around here will blame someone else when it happens. :wall: I'll be quiet and go to my corner now.

I have my kit. Whatever is left in my Morphine bottle and the rest of my single malt. Otherwise I'm a DNR.

As far as being irradiated, well, I'm disappointed, somehow. For decades those of us that served on glowboats (Nuke Submarines) told everyone that we are the life of the party....turn off the lights, we glow in the dark.
Heck, now EVERYONE will glow in the dark!
Cops can mothball their FLIR units.

As far as being prepared, well, the reactors were designed for what, an 8.6, and a 9.0 was just too big, plus the tidal wave.
Got out water, kits, stoves with fuel, food, but you know, if it's big enough, the whole big hill will end up in the lake anyway.

Yellowstone? How about Round Valley Caldera north of Bishop, California? Been "growing" for a long, long time.
Mammoth, as a kid we climbed down into the open fault.
Mount Rainier?
That one would make Mt St Helens look like a cap gun compared to a 16"-er on the Jersey.
