and it's just not the same without the B. I took the new car up to the top of Angeles Crest, and found they shut it down pretty quickly after that ranch/restaurant back in there... you LA folks prolly know what i'm talking about.

Anyways, it was a fun drive, but there was a LOT more traffic in those mountains than I'm use to, and that's because there's still about 2 to 3 feet of snow on the ground up above 5000ft of elevation. So everyone and they're entire family was going up there to play in the snow... I hung out at the top for a while with a co-worker, and played with some of the gadgets my car came with. I found it has an altimeter in the Nav unit, and it's pretty accurate.

It was kind of trippy to me. It was 64F and all this snow every where and hardly any of it was melting. Well, hardly any of it was getting the road wet. There was plenty of wet spots, but with the amount of snow I saw and the temps as they were I would have expected the roads to have been soaked.

Either way, it was a hoot, and I'd MUCH rather see 3 ft of snow in 64F temps than seeing it in temps that it takes to make it! One thing I noticed and though kind of funny was that the mountain faces that are predominantly in shadow had much more snow on them than the faces that saw more sunlight.

As far as driving the twisties went, the new car seems sure footed enough, but I really didn't want to test just how sure footed it was. There were a couple of favorite roads of mine in the mountains that weren't clogged with snow oglers (thanks to the lack of snow in those valleys), and I opened the Lancer up a bit. It surprised me how quickly it gained speed, and really got to experience what all this new valve technology is like. My Lancer has Mitsubishi's new "MIVEC" 2.0L engine, and around 4K RPM the valve timing changes quite a bit. If you have your foot in the right position, it feels like someone slapped another 4 cylinders on the car. It's kind of neat, but a bit odd to feel the power spike like that without a turbo, and definitely surprising if you're expecting to feel a smooth power curve.

The new car is turning out to be fun, but it's no MGB, and it's just impossible for a FWD car to be as fun as any rear drive car, especially compared to the way I had my B handling.

There's one thing I gotta say, I thought I never needed ... well, I probably still don't "NEED" it ... A/C in any of my cars, but now that I have it... boy do I ~LIKE~ having it... especially with the "set it and forget it controls" /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

The north faces will always have more snow because of the shade. Likewise roads along the north faces will be more likely to have ice.

Glad you're enjoying the new car. It's easy to get spoiled on modern gadgets like AC, sound-proofing, etc. But the fun factor is definitely lower.

ARGH. You're fadin' fast, Rob. Next you'll be sayin' ya ~could~ get used to an automatic tranny... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

...and when that "navsystem" hiccups you'll be afraid to go anywhere for fear of gettin' LOST. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

I drove a Volvo C30 last week. It exceeded my expectation of a gerat handling FWD, maybe because the rear wheels steer a bit or something, I don't know, but anyway, it put an LBC type smile on my face for a minute.
Enjoy your car! It sounds nice.

hey! It switched to heating automatically! and back to cooling when the huge arse windows started capturing too much sun light...

Agreed, it is definitely lower. It lacks the "seat of my pants" factor/sensation the most, I believe.

i've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'll never buy an autotragic car for myself. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif As for the nav system, I found it more annoying than helpful... the silly lady kept telling me to turn here or turn there when I knew where I was going! I think it's more useful as an 'in dash' scrolling map at this point. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

One thing I noticed while driving last night and this morning, was that I have minor bump steer; just enough to let you know which tire hit the crack/small pot hole in the road; very reminiscent of the B. However, the power assisted rack & pinion steering does numb the feeling quite a bit.

I have to say the same for the Lancer I bought. It exceeded my expectations for handling. Then again, the last FWD car I drove extensively was back in the 80's. However, I can't say the smile I get from the Lancer is as good as the smiles I got from the B. Of course, I haven't pushed the Lancer as hard as I've pushed the B yet either. I'm still pretending to break the car in at this point in time /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
