Over the years I have contemplated a 5 speed for Ms Triss - mostly in response to this contemplation I slam my head in a door until the thought goes away. However, the other day I was on Facebook Marketplace and truly by coincidence I clicked on a link for a CIVIC transmission and in the inevitable listing of transmissions that followed what to my wondering eyes should appear but a Ford T9 transmission. Now the wise among you will know that the Datsun 5 speed is not compatible with the 1500 (Big Block) engine - instead the T9 is the one to look for. Unfortunately in North America, the only car that came with a T9 was the Merkur XR4ti. A car that was reasonably rare in its time and is reasonably collectable now.

So, the holy grail appeared - and 25 minutes away. What's not to love. Turns out the seller is on the Air Force Base near us and was restoring a Fox Bodied Mustang - he though the T9 would work but quickly realized he needed a T5 transmission.

So this appeared in the garage yesterday

Oh and did I mention it cost me $150. couldn't be happier and I think I have a winter job. :D

This is exciting. I have the Datsun version behind the 1275 in the Morris and that overdrive is really nice. Will be a great upgrade for Ms Triss.

Congratulations. You will love it. I have the Datsun in Onslo and fifth gear is wonderful. Synchro first is also a great bonus but will be more so after I source a 3.9 diff.

An often unspoken HUGE plus with the Datsun tranny is the near bullet-proof clutch (that is bigger and has a regular throw-out bearing).

Congratulations! What a deal…

Is there an adapter plate or a special bell housing for the conversion?

Yes, there most definitely is (though the bell-housing is just part of the tranny). There was also a lighter flywheel. Here are two pics...

As per Boinks comment - yes, there is an adapter to the Midget bellhousing - though being a 1500 (big block :ROFLMAO: ) it looks lore like this

there also is someone on the MG experience who has figured out how to install one without cutting the plate at the bottom of the transmission opening on the car's sheet metal
