Took the midget for a drive this afternoon and it was crunch time. I was stopped at a convenience store and some guy in a pickup truck backed into the midget because he couldn't see it. He wasn't a bad fellow and when the cops came he agreed to pay for the damage.

Ouch, of all the sections that had to get hit. Thats a tuff piece to replace. At least the guy was respectful yet I know it doesnt fix how you feel right now. I like your paint.
 
Ouch! Glad everyone's okay and the guy was reasonable about it. Still, you put a lot of work into that car, nasty to see it crunched!

I won't replace that, just mask it off and take it down to the metal and use some quality filler, and then try to feather the basecoat back on it. If and if I can get the color to match. I still have the original paint in the can but with metallic it is not so simple. It happened so fast I did not even have time to blow the horn(dual air horns), I could only yell stop right before the crunch.

Thanks man, and thanks everyone. Rick, I still tell people about that upholstery work of yours.My brother is having some seats done for a 1970 dodge challenger he is restoring and I told him to add some leather underneath :wink:

If you are going to repair it yourself, it is time to use some of the insurance money for a dent stud welder at harbor freight.

The guy is going to pay me so it doesn't go on his insurance.I would never get that cowling back out even with one of those. Its going to have to be some filler.

I know when I want to push the horn to wake someone up out there my reaction is to hit the center of the stearing wheel rather then push in on the turn signal lever to activate the horn. By the time I get done fumbling around its to late. I hope you can get the paint side of it to blend. Its still a nice looking car.

Kim,
I agree on not replacing; the pillar skin is cosmetic primarily so a good repair will be sufficient. Might have to pull off the front fender to hammer back the leading edge of the pillar skin, to keep your gaps even. I think it might be a good opportunity to invest in a slide hammer and use the screw-in tip to pull the metal back out, thereby minimizing the amount of filler needed. You won't need a professional model; one of the cheap Harbor Freight ones will do.

I agree with Ray. I replaced the complete A Post on Bugsy last year and it's tough to get that piece lined up. Pull out as much as you can and then add filler. But by all means pull out as much as you can.
 
Just agreeing with Ray and Jim here. Pull it out as much as possible before adding the filler. Otherwise, that looks deep enough that just filler would crack, probably sooner rahter than later. BTW, so sorry to see the bad news, especially since it hasn't been all that long since you finished her.
 
Thanks guys. I am going to contact the guy today and see if I can get the money from him and then order some supplies and stuff and then start working on this. I hope this guy pays up, I did not get his insurance info, the cops said if the guy agreed to pay then it was not necessary. We will see. I have his name and address and phone #.
 
I agree with Ray, Kim, a dent puller to minimize the filler, even your gaps and then re-spray the pillar. I know you will work on getting it to match pretty darned close! :wink: :thumbsup: :cheers:

PS: The ding in the door bothers me more!! :frown:

The ding in the door is in the section that is not backed by anything and part of the A pillar dent is to where I can get from to it from the hinge mounting area. Also from what I can see there is a 1/4 inch hole in the inside part of the a pillar where I might be able to stick a rod or something through from the inside and see how much I can tap back out through that hole. I am not a big fan of drilling holes or welding studs where I don't have to. They work great but one metal has been heated or drilled the inside is now unpainted and can rust. From what I have been told, that cowling was made for any moisture to run down and out at the bottom of the a pillars. Still even with a punch I might not have great rust protection in there. I will let you guys know how it goes. I just ordered 265 bucks worth of stuff from california(not all of it for the MG) from the paint place that I have been dealing with. Gonna go for a motorcycle ride and meet up with the guy and he is going to give me a check and I will get the bride to cash it in the morning. Hopefully it clears and I can get my stuff in soon and start to work on it. I will tell y'all about the other paint stuff I ordered from them later when I get a chance.

Drill a small hole in the middle of eah dent & affix fasteners so you can use a slide hammer (that's what I call it)/dent puller before you put filler in there.
 
I got the door and half of the A pillar back out already. I got to get the spot nearest the fender out yet. I may do the slide hammer thing. I got some time before my supplies arrive and it is still too cool in my basement to be painting anything. I got the check from the guy today. Hopefully it cashes at the bank. He was a decent sort. He is going to buy a wireless rear camera thing for his truck. We talked about not being able to see behind a truck like that, lots of dogs, cats, kids, little old ladies, etc that could be hit that way. The cop said they have them somewhere and they are wireless for $69. That is not bad. I need one for my camper when I tow it.
 
The Auto-zone auto parts store by my house has those in there for sale. They are actually really cool and the ones I saw were wireless. People go as far as using them for spying on people in there homes and so forth. The camera is small and can be easily hidden in or around something. They had them on sale for $60 the last I saw.
