Hey gang. I had an issue with my car cover snagging my tail pipe on my exhaust muffler from a good wind over night that weakened it to the point I have a clean break where the pipe joins the muffler. After looking at the muffler, the metal is still in good shape so I started to think about Mig welding the pipe back on so I can support the exhaust with the tail pipe clamp again. I have some years welding but before I do it I wanted to ask if any of you have experience when it comes to knowing if I will damage any of the elctrical circuits with the car being a negative ground system. It may not matter yet I rather be safe then sorry.
 
You can't go wrong by disconnecting the battery cables before you weld I know alot of modern car and truck manuf. recommend disconnecting cables before any welding is done
 
I did some mig welding of the top frame while it was still bolted in the car. I did not disco the battery and did not have any problems.

the welding rig was grounded to the top frame itself, but as far as I know that was still part of the overall chassis ground for the car.
 
I've never seen this be a problem, but it won't hurt to at least disconnect the battery.

The recommended procedure is to take the ground cable off the battery.
JMHO; Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks guys. I knew about the part to disconnect the battery. My main issue was I just got all my electrical items working on the car and didnt want to create another electrical headache.
