Weird virus in my computer

I was photo editing with the cable internet running
background yesterday afternoon. It is always on.

Suddenly my screen "blinked" and opened to my desktop screen
which now had a flat black background, my icons shifted to
the sides and big red letters in the center screen warning
my computer had been attacked and I now had a virus
contamination.

I am pretty well protected so this was a surprise. But I
started running all my scan software in deep mode. All
evening long.

Total failure: warning screen still there. Went into safe
mode and set a long, deep scan while I was asleep overnight.
Nope!! That Darned warning screen still there when I got up.

By now I'm convinced I have no virus, no malware, or spyware-
something else must going on. And it was .

Some malware had changed my desktop photo theme to the virus
warning text with black background. It was a friggin'
photo. I put my photo back in- good to go.

Anyone ever have this occur?

Nope. But like you I am diligent about prevention...still, stuff can get in. The IT guys at the hospital system where I work have to fight it constantly. Last year a WORM shut down our network for two days. What kind of monster attacks hospitals? It is attempted murder, plain and simple.

Likely not an attack on the hospital per se, just a "hole" in the security. Most likely brought in "from the outside" somehow.

I "rode herd" on a LAN in the local "crisis center" for a few years, had plenty of that. Mostly introduced by the "volunteer" bunch manning the call center; bored at midnight, surfing the Web and inviting the chaos. When threatened with the offending individual having to pay the IT bill for hunting down the gremlins it did slow down a bit. But there's really no way to babysit a dozen undisciplined, uncaring end-(L)users.

that's when all instances of IE should be removed and the only "obvious" web browser be something that's not suseptible to that mash.... Lynx should do the trick! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif it would probably cut down on the on the clock surfing a bit too /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Dale,

Sounds like someone playing with ya.

Years ago when I purchased my first computer with win 3.1 I was sent a program by a friend. I was told it was a word processing program he got from a government agency. After I did the install the program does a dial out to the net.

The next thing I see I'm looking at Strategic Air Command National Defense logos and warnings not to proceeed any further under penalty of arrest, my identification has been confirmed and the FBI has been notified, etc. etc. Some joke being a newbie and all.

if one of the 'mortals' forgits his password I reset it to 'MORON' and turn off the 'change on next signon' flag. They are all too brain dead to actually change it themselves so they get 90 days to remember what they did.

Actually made a guy cry and go tell HR on me over that one coupla years back.

i've even been known to send developers (who should know better... but then again they are COBOL developers) to https://www.google-it-you-moron.com from time to time.

*SNORK!*

If you fire a gun at night in a random direction into the darkness and the bullet strikes and kills a child...the child is still dead, and you are still a murderer. People who plant viruses and worms are no different.

I'm not defending them. Just sayin' there are those who "aid and abet" (in your scenerio), and from THE INSIDE. Makes 'em "accessories" to the crime, IMO.
