wedgie on medford oregon craigs list

took a road trip in my dhc (with top down) to check out the '80 tr7 convertible that's been on medford's craig's list for a couple of days. Temp gauge stopped working, but the clock mysteriously started working. A wonderfully clear and sunny day for a drive with the top down.

The body is in pretty good shape, but it doesn't run. It had a small engine fire that burned some of the engine bay wiring harness that controls the fuel injection.

Since it's advertised as a spider is there a vin range or designation for a spider TR7? The VIN starts out TPZDJ8AA. As others pointed out the wheels are wrong for a spider, but did the spider have a name plate on the glove box, special steering wheel, etc?

I don't really care about the engine wiring since I would be dropping in a v8 anyway.

Thought I could come up with a VIN range or something in some of my reference materials, but no dice. The only thing I've got is that there were only about 1200 of them built at the Canley factory in May of 1980. They had the TR8 wheels and steering wheel and the grey interior which is almost impossible to duplicate today. If yours still has the door plate, that would give the month and year of mfg. It would also give the paint code number, but my references don't give a code for any blacks at all. Black was a color non grata on the 7's except for the Spider. What V8 did you have in mind for yours?

I think I have enough extra parts to put another rover v8 into another wedge.

The number plate on the door gave the date of july 80 which I thought at the time was kind of late in the 80 model year. The trunk cover uses gas struts to lift instead of the latching bar used in my '76.

The interior has been redone in black leather, but if original is no longer available it could be possible a previous owner settled for what was available.

I have a Spider, and it was manufactured in Aug 1980.

Rich- I hope it Rich, Does TRF or anybody still make the carpet color of the Spyder?

OK, It says "original Interior" Original seats had Stripes.

It had special wheels and stripes.
Here is a photos of an original Spider.

Now, the other way to make sure that it is a Spider is to check the Vin plate on the door. Only the Spiders had PCF for the paint code and RAF for the trim code.

The spider graphics are available and the pinstriping can be made from existing 3M reflective tape.

The one I looked at in Merlin (still on the Medford CL) didn't have the original seats (black leather seats and black vinyl door cards), the wrong wheels and wrong steering wheel. It appears to have been resprayed at some time so the graphics were probably removed and not replaced. Still, its in pretty nice shape. It had a small engine fire that burned up some of the FI wiring. I'm thinking either a small fuel leak from an injector seal or by the way it was described a severe back fire from (maybe??) the timing chain jumping. He told me that the engine only has about 10k since rebuild.

I haven't been able to locate any sources for either the carpet or upholstery.

Dang- I want a Grey carpet and can't find the Grey I want yet. I want to talk to Magic Carpet people, but I think there is a communication barrier to get thru past the TRF phone people.

A few years ago I got samples of all the gray carpet that Magic Carpet Factory uses, and none of them was even close to the shagedelic carpet in the spider. Brad at WEdgeparts was going to try and get a run done before he decided to close up shop.

I did and I can't belief all the TR grays are the same, because all the samples look the same to me. Isn't the Spyder gray darker?

PM me with your email address and I'l look through some of my photos. Somewhere I have a couple pictures/sales brochures that I snagged from EBay of a very nice unmolested Spider. If I can find them I'll send them to you.

I have a 1980 TR7 with the interior that has been discussed here, buit mine is classified as a "Special edition" not a spider. It has the steering and grey carpet as well as the striped seats as shown in the picture. It doesn't have the red pin stripes but a silver pin stripe. I will get the numbers from the door as to the vin and paint etc. Just wanted to add some info.
