Wedge wedge rear suspension

I was wondering if spirited drivers and racers put some in kind of retaining strap to bind the rear suspension coil springs to the control arms on TR7/8's?

None of mine had retaining straps when I removed / replaced the coil springs. However, I am doing a coil spring conversion on my Rangie and the kit and instructions have you install retaining straps to bind the coil spring to the axles.

I have heard of it. Especially on rallye cars where the rear axle may go to full droop and they have shorter/stiffer springs.

You only need them if the rear springs are short enough to fall out at full droop. Never seen them on a street car, but I have chains on my race car. The race car has real short springs in the back. I used rubber straps from an MGB on my first race car(RIP), but it's alot easier to weld a chain to the rear end than a rubber strap. I have a large bolt going thru the chain, and the thick metal above where bump stop used to be, to secure the top of the chain to the body.

Phil. don't do any rock crawlin with it and it will be fine

:iagree: and I should add that I have lowered springs and have had my car up on lifts, rear axle at full droop, several times without them falling out or slipping out of place.

I don't see it. Just a sway bar link that goes over the axle. Of course there is a yellow bilstein shock, an upper and lower control arm, and a spring as well.

I like your suspension work. More than I want to do though. I see that you tied the springs to the frame rather than the axle. On my rangie I tied them to the axle.

The rally cars use the shock as their straps. One word of caution on this is the upper shock mount if the shock binds will push upward and tear out, but for most of us this is not an issue! For the rear spring the lower control arm has a tube about 2 to 3 inches in length welded to the arm to keep the spring centered. The upper mount of the spring has a strap running across the diamter of the spring.
