OK, Naive guy here. Can the cylinder liners on a V8 be taken out from the top?

They press in from the top. Machine shops charge around $100 per liner to replace. "Slipped" liners are common on later motors. From what I understand, the original liners are somewhat shorten than they should be. There is a lip at the bottom of the bore that the liners never contact. Replacement liners are longer, get pressed all the way down to the lip, and then get machined smooth with the top of the block. Slipped liners will move up and down inside the bore as the piston moves up and down causing a terrible knocking sound as it bounces off the cylinder head and the lower lip. The only way I know to remove a damaged liner is to bore it out.

The rover V8 liners are a "dry liner" versus the TR2/3/4s with "wet liners". Unless you have to I would not recommend messing with the liners too much. Even boring the motor may "disturb" the liner causing it to move and leak on the post 3.9 and 4.2 blocks. If it is the original 3.5 you can bore the engine up to .060" and have enough left to feel comfy.

If the block has to be bored for an oversize liner for any reason u should have the machine shop pressure test it. I have done many a sleeve job where the block has porosity issues and the new sleeves leak during pressure testing.

I must be misunderstanding something here ... if you are putting a sleeve in the cylinder, why does it matter if the block is porous? Nothing should be able to get through the sleeve.

The propblem with a porosity/porous block is the liner may develope a leak between the liner and the aluminum casting. Additionally the prorous material may crack between the thin material that eventually will lead into either a water or oil jacket and worse a head stud hole. These issue only occurs on the 4.0/4.6 liter blocks with 4 bolt mains and some early 2 bolt main 4.2 liter blocks.

What is the motor doing/no doing Don?

Sorry for the delay Tom.
Just got back from the wilds of Puerto Vallarta.

I think what might be a Hy. valve noise I am afraid to find out, might be a liner problem.
