Well, I change the oil using the suggested castrol Syntec 20W-50. The amount I had seen to use is 5.4 Qts with filter. I did that and I can't see oil on the stick. Now maybe this stuff is pretty light and is hard to see. @ days later the valves are tapping and i still can't see it on the stick. Added the rest odf the last qt. No see and no help.

Did you replace the drain plug?

Oh and according to 2 different websites now, the capacity is a little over 6 litres.

I have trouble seeing the oil in mine too. Sounds like you need to add some.

6 Liters = 6.34 Quarts

This is something i received from a fella on the UK7/8 site. Sorry about the way it shows up. It is a Word file and I still am trying to figure cutting and pasting from Word.
Please tell me the Gear box info is right. It is what I used for my box refill.

I had a problem with the tube the dipstick goes into once on one of my cars. It didn't go into the block and the dip stick went down along side the block. Consequently, I added a few extra quarts. Hey, it's dark down there and I couldn't see that the dip stick wasn't going in the block.

Yes, that is correct. ATF is the recommended gearbox fluid, although some people swear by Penzzoil Synchromesh (considering trying it at my next change).

I just went and fetched the manual.
Box is 3.3pts.
Sump & Filter drain and refill is 9.3 pints - capacity is 10.8pints.

US pints in all cases.

It's a stock TR8 engine, right? Not an LR swap or anything like that?

You have the drain back in and the dipstick all the way down?

Is the dipstick wet to the touch?

Is the oil pressure light off when it runs?

Unless you have an oil pan that isn't a stock TR8 unit, I would bet that the dip stick tube isn't seated all the way down into the block. Stock pans only take a little over five quarts. As far as tranny fluid goes - use either the GM or the Pennzoil synchromesh stuff. Red line works well too. The tranny fluid pump is made out of nylon and can't pump thick fluids.

Geez Todd. I flushed my gearbox twice with ATF and then filled it with 0W40 Mobile which was recommended by another site!
I could read the old oil on the tube very easy. I checked today and is hard to see but It looks like it is about an 1" over filled. Looks like I might have to drain it.
could that cause the valve new tap I hear?

Sorry about the random train of thought. fried my brain playing golf today.
That would be Mobile 1
could the over fill cause the valve tappet noise from the drivers side. I filled the engine with 20w-50 Syntec

As Inspector Clousseau would have said:

"Hmmm, something here is wrong, that is not right!"

I doubt that extra oil could cause a lifter noise. Lifter noise is a common problem with the Rover. It could be caused by a small piece of dirt in the oil galley of the lifter causing it to not pump up fully. It could just be time for a new cam and lifters. My brother borrowed one of my TR7s for a summer while he was home from college. He changed the oil one day and could not get the dip stick seated properly. Not knowing how many quarts of oil it took to fill the sump, he kept checking the stick and adding more quarts. When he got up to 8 quarts, he decided it was enough no matter what the stick said. When he went to drive it, there was so much oil in the motor, that it was pushing into the cumbustion chamber. It started to billow white smoke at an alarming rate. When I went to retrieve the car, I drained and refilled the sump. There was still alot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust for the first few miles. Luck would have it a cop saw me and pulled me over. Got a ticket for an expired inspection sticker because my brother never took it to be inspected after I put it on the road for him to drive.

Is there a capacity difference in the variety's of 3.5's? Let's say the real TR8 motor and an SD1?

I am almost certain that the TR8 and SD1 use the same pan. The Range Rovers use a different pan that will not work with the TR8 cross member. Those have larger capacities. That is why it is getting so difficult to source correct oil pans. The ones in the junk yards don't fit. Next time I need one, I will just start with a newer one and cut and weld until it fits. I recently repaired a stock one for a friend that had a huge dent in it.

So i went to the source, I asked Woody. He says 6 with an oil change. So I have to drain out a qt.
