You could just do a old school quickie check, by ear.
See if the rpms @ idle increase when you slowly rotate the distributor clockwise.
When it max's out back off a tad counterclockwise.

I had planned on advancing it until I could hear pre-ignition clatter under a load, then back off, but I like your way better.
I also went out to the garage to look for my timing light and engine analyser, and remembers I gave it to a young man who was working with older cars, thinking I would never need them again. Well, they can be replaced. SMH

I use a Vacuum Gauge after I'm thru fiddling with the ignition timing....It's also a great diagnostic tool for engine problems.

I was about to mention that vacuum is another means of setting timing, adjusting timing to right about maximum vacuum from vague memories of my 49 Chevy 30 years ago.

I have an antique automotive vacuum gauge. Its one of the few items I never gave away.
