Some had the electric element in the glass, and I'm pretty sure replacement glass with the element can be had. My 1970 had it.

Main thing is to work on the heater / defroster so it works really good and fix leaks so you don't have water in the car.
 
Another option (used in my youth for the back window of a 1966 full-sized Ford) is to put a small fan back there to move air over the glass.

Just ran across this thread from a year back, and it reminded me of running intoo a couple with a Lotus Super Seven back in the late 60s doing some touring out in British Columbia (during the summer). They were from Edmonton, and had some form of aftermarket electrically heated glass stuck to the inside of the windshield for defrosting, and had worn through one of the rear fenders from the tire side, due to their studded snow tyres rubbing. Dedicated crazies! Kind of like Drew's Ural ambitions.

I guess there's no shortage of eccentrics. I'm still riding my bicycle to work daily even with 8cm ice on the roads and -7 deg C, though up to -1 today.

But to destroy Super Seven rear fiberglass with studded tires! Blasphemy. (The electric windscreens can be had for the Land Rover too.)
