I was in downtown rush hour this morning and saw the usual collection of dedicated cyclists (one on a skinny tired road bike vs the usual mountain bikes) plus a guy on a motorcycle with a side car.

Fine, except this is Calgary; temperature was -27C (about-16F)according to the read-out on the car; last night, Edmonton's airport (about a 2.5 hour drive north) managed the coldest point in Canada at -46.1C (about -51F). Wind chill was worse. I went to University in Edmonton in the 60s and temperatures in this range weren't unusual back then, but the motorcycle sure would've been.

Our bug-eye was our only car for a couple of years, back when we were younger. Put a battery the same size as the engine in it and tried to be gentle scraping the frost off the side-curtains (we kept the top up, but didn't take a chance scraping the back window).

At least we didn't have to worry about the humidex back when I used to run year-round!

Had my wife and I pulled off our move to be closer to where we work, we were considering getting a 2wd Ural sidecar rig for year-round commuting. We figured we could become the new town crazies (like all mountain towns, Park City has a few), all dressed up in full winter gear on the bike in the snow in well-below-freezing weather.

It's still in the plans if we ever do make the move. I think being the new town nutter would be sorta fun, really.

At 98 I am reaching for a long sleeve shirt. It didn't get that cold at night last summer.

Been there done that - and if I had to choose, I'd rather be being there doing that. Still prefer air conditioning to air conditioning all summer to heat to heat all winter. Besides you don't have to shovel rain or sunshine.

Drew,

We had a couple who I was VERY fortunate to meet,in
the Lotus group (Seattle,Wa.,& Vancouver,BC),who had a
Lotus Super 7,who drove in the rain, with ponchos on,smiling
when they got to their destination.
I thought "this is what it's all about".Unfortunaly,Dave
died a few years later, but Alice still has the car.
