Actually, I believe the studies have shown that overall medical costs are actually lower for those not wearing helmets.

Do you have any links to these studies? I would be interested in reading them.

There's a fella in my church that was on his bicycle, down hill, hunched over the handle bars, and the person coming up the hill turned in front of him....

Did the bug off the windshield thing and put his lower jaw up in his sinus cavity.

That was a year and a half ago, they are still gluing him back together.

OMG~!

If my car gets into an accident, Im gunna be so squashed up' a helmut isnt gunna make a bit of difference'

heck their just rolling coffins anyway~!

Helmets are one of the main reasons I kinda switched from bikes to sportscars. It was not fun bundeling up in a jacket and helmet to go for a ride when it's 90+ degrees out.
I will not ride a bike without proper gear.
If I was going to do anything to protect my head in a roadster it would be harnesses and a rollbar.
I think wearing a helmet in a car in regular traffic is dangerous. it limits your vision. You are free to twist around on a bike and see what's around you. you are pretty much stuck in place in a car.
It's different on a track, when you don't need to watch for cross traffic and pedestrians.

Someone has raised a good question: is it legal to wear a helmet (a half helmet, not a full helmet) while driving a car.

Tomorrow I will try to contact Virginia DMV to get an answer.

Anyone out there from Virginia happen to know?

I think a leather football helment from the 1930s{ala Three Stooges} might be the look some people are looking for. The girly looking horse hat would get you beaten up in an alley, with the crowd of guys,I know. If I ever start worrying about such things, the Jack Nicholson 1960s "Easy Rider" style will be for me. I hope this doesnt start a trend. When your number is up,you'll be the first to know.

I'll stick with my "dorkey british driving cap" when driving the LBC. When riding my Silverwing I always wear a my helmet.

My wife is told me that it is not legal to wear a mask while operating a motor vehicle in the state of Virginia. We could not find this addressed in the Virginia state motor vehicle code.

Hey Kodanja, I think I work with him.

I am not sure a helmet will do anything for us other than to use as a bucket to hand what's left of us back to our next of kin. The most fun might be to see what kind of looks you get.

I called the Virginia DMV and State Police this morning and was told that there is no prohibition in Virginia against wearing a helmet while driving a car.

The type of helmet I have in mind is a motorcycle helmet that doesn't have a face mask, not a "full helmet." Certainly it will not save your life in a serious crash, but it doesn't take much of a bump on the head to cause real damage to your brain, and these cars don't give much protection -- front, back, or to the sides. And as for a roll bar -- of debatable safety -- they have to be low enough to allow you to put your top up and therefore are great for smashing your head against if rear-ended or a minor collision.

We take risks with these cars, of course, but it is possible to even the odds a little.

As I said, he who crashes and walks away, lives to drive another day.

In 40 years of serious driving, I've had three items flip up off the road and hit the windshield with any force that might have injured someone. None would have hit me. One would have hurt if it did.

But in a LBC on an interstate, if ever that is the case, and with 18 wheelers on the road, and stuff flying all the time, goggles and a helmet would be a good thought for someone tall enough so that their head peaked up above the windshield frame.

For me, I'd stay off the interstates, and I'd probably want a good baseball hat on or something like that just as a precaution on other highway trips, however ineffective that might be.

I can't see a helmet or goggles in any regular traffic. Imagine having a helmet on and being slammed in the side by someone you didn't see because of obstructed vision. Or, imagine a real life case--a boulder that comes bouncing off the road straight through the windshield, or something that hits square in the face and not just at the cranium.

Wearing a helmet in any of those cases would be false security. I think it's the bigger things to worry about.

Wait a minute. We're talking about your lives here. Anyone wanting a helmet should get one. And no one better get hit in the head or eyes anytime soon! Onward, and safe travel to all.

My reply was not meant to disuade anyone from wearing a helmet that wanted to. By all means, it is your choice. Nor would I laugh or snicker at anyone that wanted to wear a helmet.

My choice is not to wear one. However, I could be persuaded to wear a flying cap and goggles on occasion as long as I had a long white scarf to go with them.

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

Wear one or don't wear one. Regardless of the law if a cop *thinks* (in his/her mind) that it is illegal you WILL get pulled over if just for a warning and a quick look at your strange old car.

Jeremy:

That looks about right, except for the solid side flaps and long visor. There are motorcycle helmets the look just like that except for the flaps and the long visor.

Someone mentioned it above, and I agree: if someone were to design a modest helmet for this purpose, perhaps with a logo on it or something like that, I suspect there would be a market for it.

Remember: people laughed at seat belts. As I remember it, the first street cars that I ever saw with seat belts were British sports cars in the early 1950s. Here's our chance to lead the way again.

If anyone finds a nice helmet that seems appropriate -- please, no leather aviator helmets ("Snoopy and the Red Baron type") or football helmets or baseball helmets -- please let us know.

M. Pied Lourd. Faites attention: Remember what happened to Isadora Duncan when she wore a long flowing scarf in an Amilcar!

Yes Lex....not a good way to go! Yes, "affectations can be dangerous"....

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

Don't tell me I'm the only only one here that remembers these advertisements that appeared in "Road & Track" (and many other car magazines in the '60's) showing the stylish Buco helmet.
