Installed the radio & the console today. Not all the screws in yet, but, we got tunes and it works well. Obviously not a road test yet but I'm happy - looks great too.

Here are the speakers. I managed to put a pair of 4" speakers behind the grille. Depending on how the sound goes this summer, I might through a pair under the seats this winter.

Oh, and everything else - hazard/ interior/ door lights too - hurray!

seriously, possibly today. I've been holding off till everything that required leaning/ crawling into the cockpit was done.

At lunch I might get a minute to finish installing the console, then, for some reason, my driving lite no longer works - though I think I know why.

On the plus side, I have a strong son at home to help.

BTW - I have two flanges - black - with a kind of half circle at the end - they are for the door to body straps but I can't remember how they go?
 
JP, consider putting something in to deflect water behind or to the sides of the radio. Don't ask me how I know, but water can get in there and if it goes into the top of the stereo it will not be happy.
 
Very nice and cool idea. I got lucky when I purchased my Midget. The previous owner put in a stereo system with Clarion speakers mounted down by the leg area in the cockpit on the fender walls (drivers & passenger sides). They blend in really nice as I have black carpet and vinyl interior. The devider for the cockpit and the trunk is a perfect spot for larger speakers yet when the top is down it will muffle them a bit. The angle of the divider inside works perfect to project the sound up to head level. You can mount the amp then under the seat or in the trunk.
 
Did you put some bass blockers or cross overs on those little speakers? I'd think they would distort very easily being so small. I hope to add some little ones up front on mine too, to even out the sound. I made my own "console". I've since cleaned it up and painted it. Looks pretty good, can be gotten out in seconds.

I was in a rain storm the other week and noticed water dripping into the console area. I placed my hands inside and sure enough I had some wet wires. I'll make sure to make the console all enclosed so to reduce water from coming in - maybe this explains why my speakers stopped working! LOL
 
I'd like to install some booming speakers in my midget. Any recommendations? Should i just install 2 speaker boxes in the back with easy disconnects so I can place them in the tiny trunk when not in use?

I mounted Sony Xplod 6x9's in the back divider of my 78 Midget and a pair of 6.5 inch Alpines up front (one on the drivers side fender wall and the other in the glove box pointing down).
After I replace my stereo (due to water damage) it will once again sound 'boomin' good.
 
good ideas all - thanks I'm going to try without bass blockers for now but expect a long list of to do's next fall. Rick - wise council on the cover - no do I want to pull it out again?
 
What will it cost and how much time will it take to replace it after it's ruined by water seepage? How PO'd will you be that you didn't do it?

Just make sure there is air space above it so it can vent heat out.

I am trying to figure out what to so with my '69 MGB.

Right now, it has the original, factory AM-only radio. :jester:

I think I last listened to AM radio around the year the car was built.
The antenna was replaced by a rubber plug the first week I owned the car.

But I'm not really wanting to recieve AM or FM.

I'm thinking of installing a radio with USB/I-Pod jack so that I can play tunes directley from my I-Pod.
So far, the easiest and cheapest way seems to be to buy an AM-FM car radio with the appropriate jacks and skip the antenna/radio part of the connection (and just use the radio to connect the I-Pod with the speakers).

This plan has to be done cheaply, of course. :laugh:

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
 
I like the idea of a stereo with a memory card slot, read mp3 or WMA right off the card.
I got one (the VR3) and it was good until it got wet. It would only read 1 GB memory cards, nothing bigger. The other thing that's tempting is to get one that can read dvd's so I could put several gigs of music on there. It would be nice to have a decent menu system though, and you can go all the way with a Car PC - which would be nice for music and could be used for other things like gps & internet.
 
The only time I miss my radio (the Ugly Bug doesn't have one) is when I'm sitting in traffic. Once I'm out driving, all sorts of other things have my attention (part of the reason I prefer convertibles).
 
My elcheapo Sony has an input up front for an iPod, love to set great traveling tune playlists for cruising around. FM I use, CD player I'll never use. AM I would use for news but my currently hidden antennae gets nothing AM.
Having said all that, 1/2 time I don't use it all as the wind and motor are music enough.
 
I had the same type in installation up until about 2 weeks ago. Worked well! My radio wouldn't sit flush though (it was too deep) and I was tired of the shifter being right in the way of it, so I am working on a new setup.

One piece of advice - When I found the instructions for doing this on the Teglerizer site ( Teglerizer Site ), he had mentioned that they put a shield between the speakers and radio to help dissipate the magnetic field.

I did not do this, and my radio ended up crapping out. I didn't really think about it until now, but this could be why it did.

I put the radio in the dash on the passenger side through the bolster just last week, and will be fabbing up a smaller console to house the emergency flashers, tweeters, cig lighter, and use the stock speaker grill. I'll post pics when I am done.
