Finally gave in & bought another appliance (er - car).
We bought a '96 Toyota Corolla.Of couse it's White.
Daughter's driving it.She complained about the brakes
making noise.Checked the rears - almost gone.Couldn't get
the drums turned,so bought a new set of shoes.
I thought that this would be a quick job.Took me 3 hours.Seems Toyota uses this spring at the top of the shoe-
-part of the e-brake.There's a groove on the end of the adjustor that the spring likes to into.At least it works now.
The car defines the word "Generic".Maybe I'll put bar codes on the side.Or I could rob a bank with it as a getaway car.Eyewitnesses would describe it as a "White -
-Japanese car".

We had a Gold Mazda Protege rental car a few years ago.
My Wife called me from the local mall.
"Someone stole the Mazda!".I told her to wait a little
while,just to be sure.Sure enough,I got another call -
- "I found it".
What I'm getting at is that I have a hard time getting
excited about a car being reliable.Japanese cars usually
are..... but very boring.

Can't disagree with that! A similar thing happened to the wife and I after a Rolling Stones concert in Albuquerque. We spent 2 hours after the show looking for our dark green Saturn SL2. Not Japanese, but still a boring car.

We had a 93-ish GEO Prizm which is a rebadged Toyota Corrolla. With about 120,000 miles and some dings and dents, we decided to get rid of it.

As it turned out, there was an open track day at Lime Rock and my racer was out-of-commission.

So I took the Prizm. For one Last Fling. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Since it was an automatic, I put in a new set of front brake pads ($14 at AutoZone!). No other "race prep".

I positively flogged it at Lime Rock for over three hours. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

When I got home, I found my sister suddenly needed a car, so I gave it to her. She drove it for years with no problem and then passed it on to another family member who ran it for a year. Still ran perfect when they dumped it.

Any time anyone asks me: "What car should I buy?" and I know they're not afflicted with "The Disease" I tell 'em: "One word-- TOYOTA!"

All the car knowledge you need for 'em is how to turn th' key.

I enjoy working on my hobby car no matter what the problem. I do not enjoy working on the various family daily drivers, so reliable works for me.

Interestingly, back in the day my various sports cars (Triumphs, MG and Lotuses (Loti?)) were my daily drivers and I didn't like working on them at 3 in the morning so that I could get to work that day. I kept trading them for supposedly reliable cars until I got the itch again; which is why I no longer have my TR5 or Elan Sprint!!!

WHEW! I thought there was an epidemic of refrigerator replacement beginnnig. Today I'm having the junkman haul off the old freezer and refrigerator in Jerri's pantry & I've gotta go to Lowe's to replace them. hehehe

96 Corolla. That's not a refrigerator!
THIS is a refrigerator!

And even though it's a Toyota,(ok Scion, but still Toyota) I think it's fun.
Looks funky, handles good, great milage, tons of room inside.

angliagt, youve got the basic color now all ya need is a roll of masking tape and a can of blue spray paint and off to the races youll go. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I think that I'll paint it Red,& put some #8 numbers
on the doors,& a case of Budweiser in the trunk.

My wife had a '98 Corolla when we got married. Sold it a couple years a go. Reliable and reasonably comfy. And purple (she called it the Grape). Nice car for the basic transport needs.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif Not too far back I was doing a lot of traveling and consequently had to rent numerous generic midsize cars. It seems they were always white. I soon got smart and said I only wanted a car that had an automatic trunk. This was necessary as many times I found it difficult to locate the rental in the parking lot. However with an automatic trunk all I had to do was use the clicker and voila there was the rental with the open trunk!!!

I have never owned a generic car and hope never to. I'm too old to not recognize my own car.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

(still loving those bananas)

Generic cars do have their place. I really like my current daily -- a 2003 Hyundai Accent hatchback, owned since new. Gets me to work, fits my upright bass and all sorts of music gear, and it's paid for. Cheap to run, cheap to own. Helps balance out LBC (and motorcycle) ownership nicely.

So... "refridgerator" is slang for a generic car, regardless of color?

Nothing about cars under "refridgerator" or "refrigerator" in Urban Dictionary.

Sorry to be so uncool.

Thanks, Jeff.

We call 'em "Brand X" in my club. Like:

"John and Mary's TR6 is broken down so they are driving Brand X to the show."
