Waterpump vs radiator?

I have put several 1275's in older Sprites and have often had the problem of the fan hitting the radiator (or at least being VERY close).
I noticed that there are two different waterpumps for the 1275 and wonder if one is shorter and therefore doesn't cause the problem, or if they both even fit.
It looks like the difference is the smog vs non-smog engines and it makes me curious.
Anyone? (Frank?)

Bill,

Cross post this to "the list". I'm aware that there is an issue with this, long neck vs. short neck water pumps and clearance issues. I can't remember the details but it has come up before.

The difference in the pumps is debatable, and not recognized by some manufactures, lies in the impeller depth, not the overall length.
