Waterproofing a distributor?

So I have seen these little boots for 4 cylinder distributors and for ignition coils. Has anyone ever seen one of these for a 6 cyl distributor? I have a modern cap so my wires come out the top. If I could find one of these, maybe from a Jeep site or some other offroad guys it would probably work.

It may be a great way to keep our ignition systems alive when we get caught in the rain. I sure could have used it on the way to conclave last year. Ever seen a 6 cyl version of one of these?

I have been in a lot of rain over the years and it wasn't the dizzy that got wet it was ME!!!-???--:highly_amused:

British Leyland used to supply a cover for mini dizzies because of the percieved vulnerability to water (being positioned behind the front grill). They actually made things worse by becoming a condensation trap. Just something to think about. ;)

it wasn't perceived! Early Minis stopped in a drizzle! We used to carry WD40 and saturate inside and outside the distributor cap to try and get home. They may have still given trouble, but nothing like as much as without I promise you.

I only had problems with my 1978 mini twice with the dizzie getting wet. Both occasions involved torrential downpours and driving through semi flooded roads. Saying that I only had the car for a couple of years...

My first car was a 1960 mini, drove it every where in all conditions and never had a problem - I only sold it when the front wheel fell off on a corner - well tucked under the car as the top ball joint snapped. Then I bought myself a Healey to replace it.

I've driven my BJ8 in torrential rains as fast as was prudent and never had any issues I could attribute to water in/on the ignition system. The only times I've had problems is when I've washed the engine, but a good blow-dry of all components--including the inside of the distributor--takes care of that.

Bob - You probably mentioned this in another thread - but did you seal all your wires going into the cap with dialectric grease?

A long time ago--I do this as a matter of practice now--but it's probably long since gone. I just don't think you're liable to get a lot of water on the top end unless you drive through a river, in which case you got bigger problems.
