General Tech Water Pump

If I recall correctly, there are two tricks to installing the water pump. For one, the front pulley shroud should be installed first so that the spindle drive can be held in place while the lock nut is installed toward the front. Second, I think there’s a bolt that must be put through the water pump first so the shroud is not later in the way. Am I recalling correctly?

Definitely yes to the second point unless you have replaced that bolt with a stud.

Probably yes to the first point as it's easier to install the pulley on the bench but not impossible later.
