Water Pump Problem????

For the messy solution, I'd just remove the Tstat housing and start the engine. If the pump is doing it's thing, you'll see the gusher.
 
I am going to check that the sensor is working correctly and not giving me a false reading that I am now chasing after. I will also put a piece of tubing on the block drain and see if there is a fair amount of pressure coming out of the block drain when the car is running. I am thinking that if the block is all clear and the pump is circulating, that I would see reasonable flow under some sort of pressure through the block drain.
 
Oaky - now it is time for me to admit I am an idiot. As an engineer, I should know better. When I saw that the gauge was going to full hot when idling in cool weather and the previously functioning electric fan just wasn't coming on, I should have done the logical thing first. CHECK THE GAUGE!!!! After all of the messy and pain in the a$$ efforts to check the thermostat, the pump, etc. I should have checked the gauge first. I borrowed a friend's IR temp gauge and it seemed that the temps were not going too high even though the temp gauge was pegged. I held my breath and let it run a bit longer and the electric fan finally came on. After a short time the fan shut off again. Exactly like it is supposed to do and exactly like it has been doing for the past year since the engine was started. I am now guessing that the first drive (out on a fairly bumpy road) probably jarred something in the original gauge causing it to fail. Now I can remove the gauge and send it off for repair and get on with my life.

That's great news, but you're saying your engine never gets hot enough anymore for the fan to click in? Lucky you! That must be a fine radiator. I've been thinking about getting one. Is it built like the older ones, with the thin tin fins between the frame, and you can attach an electric fan using the rods through the fins attached with tension clips?

I think that you missed the part that says that the fan comes on and then goes off when needed. It does come on when I sit for a bit. It is a Wizard aluminum radiator with the fan mounted behind it in welded-on brackets. Very clean look. It also has an oil cooler mount welded directly to the front as well. I have the oil cooler mounted but not plumbed yet. I bought it slightly used at the Carlisle Replica & Kit show in PA a couple of years ago.

Seems to be a very good quality. Very nice welds. The previous owner worked for them.
