refresh my memory friends, can I do this with the rad in situ?

1500 engine

Sorry cant help with a spitfire

I don't know either (yeah, no much help there) but I would pull it out anyway for the following reasons:
1. More room to work.
2. Less chance of damaging it.
3. The system is drained anyway.
4. Opportunity for a really good flushing out, possibly even having a radiator shop do a thorough cleaning.
5. Good opportunity to replace the hoses and inspect the rest of the area for rust, oil leaks, general wear & tear.

Just my 2 cents worth!

At the very least put piece of cardboard up against the radiator to keep from damaging fins.

I think that would be a nay on that. I made the oops of putting the radiator back in after replacing my water pump, and realized I had left the fan blade off. There just wasn't enough room to slip the fan blade in there without taking the radiator out again. I'm thinking there wouldn't be room to get the fan, clutch, and water pump out together for the same reason.

thanks all - now to actually get to it

When I replaced the water pump on mine, I pulled the radiator. I also took out the shroud -- gave me an opportunity to refinish it while I was working on that part of the car.
