water pump bearing dimensions

I bought a kit for the old water pump and all seemed hunky dory until I compared the new bearing to the old one. The groove in the bearing (for the snap
ring) is supposed to align with the groove in the housing. See photo. That puts everything in a slightly different position Does it matter?

Tom, I would say yes as the grove spots the bearing flush with the front of the cover. Here is a pic of my new kit just purchased from Ken at Dave Bean Engineering. HTH, Jerry

Tom, On second review you'll notice the grove on my bearing is in the wrong spot compared to your original and compared to the one in my cover too. I guess the grove doesn't really matter as long as the other dimensions are the same. Who knew? I have the Bean instructions if you want a copy. Jerry Rude 4005R TCS

Thanks for the reply. The one in your picture seems to be correct or at least matches the old one I took out of my pump.
Further messing about with the pump bearings revealed that the pump with the groove in the wrong position, the top one in my photo above, also has a groove nowhere deep enough for the little ? retainer (looks like a question mark). I assume Bean's kit comes with that retainer also. My first kit did not.
We had ground the groove before I bought a second kit. (Probably not a good idea) Perhaps the clip is not necessary? That would certainly make the installation a whole lot easier.
